I have a 1995 E350 with a 460CI engine. My problem is that when I try to start the engine and turn the key on the column, sometimes nothing happens as in no cranking of the engine. Almost as if the battery was completely dead. I can hear the fuel pump and other things click on but no motor turn over. If I turn the ignition switch on and off a couple of times it will eventually start cranking and start. I had the starter checked out and ignition switch replaced but still have the problem intermittently. Can this be a problem with the ignition key cylinder? Any help is much appreciated.
Older Fords (I don't know if yours is included) had a problem with the start wire (12 gauge?) corroding just off of the starter solenoid. It will appear ok but coroded under the insulation.
Another thing to consider is if your van has an additional solenoid near the starting battery, my '98 has one and it went bad.
Good luck, John
I have now checked the start wire and key cylinder. I'm now suspect the tranny shifter not sensing that it is in the park position. I can't find the location of this sensor. Is it in the tranny itself or ??? I can't seem to find any information in the Chilton's book that I have. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
the poor man's quick way to test the neutral safety switch is to put the key in the ignition, turn it to crank and wiggle the shifter. if it all of a sudden it cranks and you wiggle it some more and it stops, the try adjusting the NSS . if that doesn't work replace it.
Check for loose screws at the bottom of the steering column at the shift cable bracket that holds the transmission shift cable.
This happens a lot, make sure gear pointer is pointing at the correct place (gear) and tighten the two screws.
My 93 E350 with 460 in it just got a new starter to solve problem like that , I really had a problem after running it didnt want to start back up , new starter spins motor so much faster.
