Need help trying to find out why my van won't start. I have a 95 E150 Van with a 351 motor in it. The van turns over but won't start. I checked rotor/cap and for spark and all are good. So I'm guessing that I might have a fuel problem? The motor has fuel injection and I'm not very famuliar with these systems. I'm guessing I should open up a fuel line somewhere between the fuel pump and the motor to see if I have a fuel supply or not? Any recommendations on what to do next would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks
Can you hear the fuel pump run for one second after you turn the key to the on (run) position?
If not try resting the Inertia Switch.
If this does not do it see if the Fuel pump relay clicks when the key is turned on.
If it does not click ground pin #6 of the VIP test connector and see if it makes then with the key on.
Let us know what you find so we can go from there.
Okay, I'll try the above when I get home. Do you know if the fuel pump is located at the tank or somewhere else? Trying to figure out where I need to be listening. I believe that the fuel relay is located in the fuse distribution panel under the hood? Thanks for your help!
Well did as you said, turned the key and really didn't hear any noise that would indicate that the fuel pump was coming on. Went to the power distribution box and listen for the relay to click also but it didn't. Removed the relay and reinstalled, wham...fixed! Well, at least I think it is fixed. I'm guessing that the relay got stuck or the fingers were not making good contact? Not sure but after re-installing the relay it started right up and I could hear the fuel pump turn on also. I'm going to see if it happens again. I might need a new relay though. Thanks for your help Bill most appreciated.
Cheers!
My 94 died and I was able to rap the tank with a rubber mallet (hard) to get it started and get home. it worked only once. I was really lucky. Of course the tank was full...
Replace the fill and overflow hoses while you have the tank down...if indeed your pump needs to be replaced.
Okay, I grounded pin 6 of the VIP connector and turned the key on and off. Looks like I can only hear the relay clicking (or some other relay) on and off. But still no fuel pump turning on. So is the problem now isolated to the pump or wiring back to it? Thanks for your help.
Leave the key on and ground and unground pin #6 and see if the fuel pump relay clicks.
If it clicks leave it grounded with the key on and check for power at the Inertia Switch with a test light.
If you have power at the Inertia Switch (both sides to ground) it is a good bet that the pump is bad.
This is sounding like the pump is bad. I had to do one on my van at about 130,000 miles. It just quit. Fine until I got to the grocery store. When I came out, nothing.
When you drop the tank to replace the pump, have a new filler tube and vent line as these prone to crack and leak. So as long as you have the tank down, change it then.
How difficult is it to replace/drop the tank? I'm guessing that I just lift the van up with a jack and stands and drop it down a few inches and I can get to everything? I think the most difficult problem is getting all the gas out of the tank to make it lighter.
Thanks
