i have a 99 ranger 4.0. when i am going up a hill and my truck needs to downshift it knocks, missfires, jerks, and everything happens. i then let off the gas paddle and hit again and it downshifts fine. any ideas as to what the problem could be?
OK good feedback, so it doesn't act out with the OD swtched off, thats a good clue.
Well I don't rightly know how easy it'll be to fix, because we don't yet have all the info we need to diagnose the problem.
When you let up on the gas & mash it again, that unlocks the torque converter, sorta like switching it off, as you've done on the test.
Now we need to try and figure out why the computer isn't unlocking the torque converter in time, so it won't overload the engine, as it's kinda like trying to pull a steep hill in 4th gear with a straight drive.
Problem is, I don't know all the clues the computer uses to decide when to unlock the torque converter, so we need a power train guru to chime in & educate us some.
Thinking about this some more & noting the vintage of your ride is the same as mine & kowing that my spark plug gap was .008" over max spec, at only 50K miles, makes me want to ask if you've checked your plug gap recently.
If it's really wide & way out of spec, it cause a weak spark that could lay down on you with just a little engine load!!!!
Edit: So maybe by turning the OD off, it unloads the engine enough that it won't act up!!!!
