here's the deal guys. i am soon going to get my first truck and my dad has recently bought a f150. his old 99 f250(not superduty) extended cab, 4.6 liter is being used as a farm truck for now. most likely i will either get his truck or some other vehicle. his truck averages about 16. i have seen this ranger on craigslist and was wondering about what it would make gas mileage wise and if it was a good decision to get it.
Equipment: AM/FM stereo, CD player, cassette player, dual front air bags, A/C, P/S, P/W, Power door locks, tilt wheel, cruise control, sliding rear window, bed liner, full size poly tool box, keyless entry.
Price is $5500 or best offer.
most of my driving will be highway driving about 8 miles to school and practices if this helps. also i will have to bring my two siblings to school.
I dont know wher you live, but, 5500 sounds high to me. Will you have to purchase the 250 from dad or will let you drive it.
If he will let you drive the 250, $5500 will buy alot of gas!
As a Dad and seeing you haul all my children, I prefer to see you in the bigger truck. You'll see only a small favaorable improvement on the gas mileage with the Ranger. Plus maybe you can contribute the money saved from the purchase to help good ole Dad with the insurance!! Whatever you drive, be safe and smart.
it's mainly my mom but she wants me to either let them get me a car or the f250. i just like the rangers. she said she would have to personally see the passenger seating in the ranger before she would let me buy one. i will probably just go with the f250 though. thanks guys.
Sound like you'd probably have enough room with the Ranger. My '94 with 4 liter auto gets about 20 mpg at best. The '98 your looking at would have to be in great shape to be getting $5500. Seems a bit pricey if it's in average condition.
I understand you wanting a ranger, there small, yet sporty and a very good truck. Let your mom's check out the ranger and see what she has to say. I had a super duty for a while and I perfere the size of the ranger. Everyone allways thinks the price of a ranger is too much, I don't know where they live that they give rangers away, but it's not a round here. Also asking price has dickering room built in. I mean it does sound a bit high, but the seller expects you to haggle, the real price is more like 4,500 or 4,000 I would think.
Don't let Mom see it, or she'll want it!!!!
On second thought, if they were going to opt for a car, maybe the Ranger would sell itself if she saw & drove it, so both of you would be happy!!!!
It sure can do a lot of things around a farm & still look good on the weekend for those special dates!!!!
If your really interested in it, have the folks check it out closely & ask for the maintenance records.
Seeing as how it's a 98 & has a drop in bed liner, instead of a spray on liner, I'd check REAL close for rust through underneath.
Because the dropin liner traps & holds moisture & dirt underneath & where ever it touches the bed, it'll scuff the paint as it jiggles around, do that long enough & youll soon wear through the paint & have rust, or rust through.
The guys are right, you could buy a lot of gas for the F-250, for $5500.
But as pointed out, it's a starting/asking price, you could probably get it for less & if that "less" price was about the figure the folks were going to spend for a car, maybe the Ranger fits the bill for both you & the folks.
My 99, which is equipped about the same, turns 17-19 in town & 22-24.8 on the road.
Maybe a good tune up & a light foot on the go pedal, would help the F-250!!!! lol
Anyway congrats on getting your first ride.
Let us now how it turns out.
