auto 4x4 hubs

auto 4x4 hubs

I have a F250 4x4 XLT – so the switch for engaging the 4-wheel drive is on the dash. My hubs are in “auto” but am having problems with it slipping out of 4-wheel drive. If I switch my hubs to “lock” will that allow the 4-wheel drive to activate without the switch?

No, the switch on the dash engages the vacuum solenoid that allows vacuum to pull you auto hubs in and engage your hubs. The switch also enegizes the shift motor on the transfer case. If you are slipping out of 4wd because of a vacuum leak, then putting you hubs in the locked posistion will solve the problem. You will still switch the transfer case with the dash switch. Chances are, if you have a vacuum leak, you heat will default to defrost because of loss of vacuum. You may can find where the leak is by tracing the rubber lines form the vacuum pump(passenger side firewall) to the inside of the hubs. If you don't have a vacuum leak, then you shift motor is not holding your transfer case in gear.

How do you know it is slipping out of 4 wheel drive? Is the light in the dash going off, or are the front wheels not pulling?

No the light stays on,, just no traction. I plow, and I'm useless with out 4 wheel drive. The think I have experianced twice is that I don't know that the 4wheel drive has disengaged, so I gas it, spin the rear wheels & then (sometimes) the 4 wheel drive will slip into gear, making a LOUD clunk, like I'm about ready to drop the transfuer case or something -- don't want to do that too much!
