Well that's not much to go on but if it's on the intake manifold it may be the choke heat coil.

rjcline,

That is the heat exchanger for the automatic choke.

Some Motorcraft 2150 2V carbs were equipped with an automatic choke thermostat that was warmed by air pulled through that coil, which is exposed to the hot exhaust gas in the intake manifold's exhaust crossover.

I will assume since I didnt find one of these on my other three motors they all had manual chokes? I dont see how I could of missed them...sigh now Im confused..I thought a manual choke meant you had a **** in the cab of your truck you pulled when you were cold starting..

Oh well... thanks for the information! back to the study board I guess....seems like every day I find out 2 more things I need to know and dont!!

The Motorcraft 2150 2V carb used at least three or four different systems to warm up the automatic choke.

Those without the hot-air coil include:

1) All-electric chokes, heated only by electricity supplied from the alternator while the engine runs

2) Hot water chokes, heated by warm coolant in one of the heater hoses held against the side of the thermostat by a metal clip

By 1972, almost all light-duty trucks had automatic chokes.

I have never seen a factory manual choke on any M-block application, car or truck.

What is this??

ok that makes more sense..my other motors have automatic chokes but heated in a different way. If you read this again and if you have time...

I always thought it would be cool to have the manual pull thingy for a choke...can it be done or is it too much of a pain to bother with?

Otherwise, thanks again for all the info!! :-)

What is this??

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Dec-02 AT 04:27 PM (EST)]There are manual choke conversions available and they work pretty well when they are set up correctly. The problem I have is I keep forgetting to open them up when the engine gets warm so the choke stays closed longer than necessary.
Good working automatic much less problematic IMHO.

To answer your last question: yes and yes. It can be done, and it's too much of a pain to bother with.

I agree with macguyver. A properly functioning automatic choke is reliable and much less hassle.
