vinyl siding ?

I'm about to install vinyl siding on a new house. The siding is insulated with foam on the backside which makes it almost 1 1/4" thick, therefore the corners and J- channel are wider. The windows do not have the built in J-channel so J has to be run around the windows. The problem is the windows only come out past the walls 1 1/4" and the J-channel is 1 1/2" wide so the J is going to be sticking out past the windows. I'm thinking that at the bottom of the windows water will rest on the J channel and run back behind it. I'm thinking it wouldn't do much good to bend an aluminum drip tray to put between the J and the window and the only other thing that comes to mind would be to caulk around the window. Anyone have any suggestions?

If the siding is almost 1.25" thick I would see how much of the back of the J you could rip off with a saw. Then I would live with what I could and caulk the underside.

With undersill on the Vinyl I wonder what would happen if you just left the bottom J channel piece off completely.

You are correct that this is a potential leak.

What type of windows are they?

If you have a brake, the best way to handle this problem is to add a strip of wood the length & width of the existing sill & make a new sill to run the whole way in under the window sash, then down over your wood & back in. I've done this on Andersens and even metal clad windows, just wrap the edges back & be careful to seal it at the bottom of the rails.

How are your windows trimed out now? Do you have sill or is it just boxed out. I don't think anyone can answer your question without more input. Can you take a pic? That would help a great help.

They're boxed vinyl clad Andersen, pretty nice. The siding is double 6" ship lap and I've run it almost to the bottom of the windows. The nail flange of he last piece is just about 1 3/4" away from the window so I'll only be leaving about 1 3/8" on the bottom of the notch on the next piece so with the profile it will fit snug into the J. A deeper sill with a slight slope under the the window may be an option. I wish I could get a pic but the house is an hour away and I wont be able to make it back there until monday

I would put a good bead of silicone at the 90, then install the J channel. That should keep it water tight.
