Most DOT anymore have a sensor in the front of there truck that takes in the exhaust fumes to tell what type of fuel you are running and the way that they can tell is red fuel has 500ppm or more while most green fuel anymore has 15ppm or less. Usually most of the red fuel will make a truck put out a lot more black smoke than your normal over the road fuel will.
Any such sensor would be next to worthless for the DOT and getting more so by the day.
We as a public school district are tax exempt and we legally use dyed fuel, the only dyed fuel available in this area is dyed ULSD. We have not been able to get LSD since the middle of 2007, we are in the middle of corn country and are using the same fuel the farmers, the railroad and the heating oil customers get and its dyed ULSD.
Many folks hear the term dyed fuel and all they think of is off road equipment and high sulfer. Cites, Countys, Public schools, State maintenance trucks they are all tax exempt and operate on the roadways and can legally use dyed fuel and its ULSD.
Since dyed ULSD can be used in any tax exempt vehicle and LSD can only be used off road, almost everyone is getting ULSD, dyed or undyed, regardless of what they think they are getting.
