ok, i think i have a ticking camong from under my passenger side valve cover. now it might be spark knock but i won't know for sure till next week when all my parts come in for my tune up. when i do my tune up i will be doing my valve cover gakets. is there a way beside trying to move the rocker to see if it is bad? should i just retorque them down? i am trying to save some money if possible, the wif always complains when i need a part. and also, is it hard to do the intake gasket? mine is leaking really bad from the back. it isn't the oil sending unit, i just checked that.
well i was doing some looking around on here and i found out that if you dissconnect the egr on a stock motor, it will ping. could this be a ping and not a ticking? if i were to play with my timing would it go away? i am so lost with this engine and all this emissions crap. please don't think i am really stupid (maybe a lil bit)i am just trying to learn.
aj5601 , The rockers are not adjustable if your working on a 351M or a 400. If you are sure the noise is under the valve cover, its probably a worn rocker arm and or pushrod.
This is a fairly common problem with these after they get some miles on them.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Dec-02 AT 00:02 AM (EST)]your question about the intake gasket and how hard it is I can answer if the engine is a 351M I replaced mine about a month ago when I replaced my head gaskets on my 78 f150 you will have to disconnect all the vacum lines and linkage to the carb but you will not have to take the carb off the intake the gasket itself is a big pan looking thing with port openings on each side it costs about $30 and you can't bend it putting it in or it won't seal. You might want to have someone help you because the intake is very heavy to manuver by your self b/c it has to go in at an angle under the distributer. A person could probably accomplish the job in under a hour and a half with help
hope I helped.
P.S. Make sure you drain the water coolant level below the intake level or you will have coolant all through your engine. Believe me I learned through experience!
There is an oil groove in the rocker arm. After some time the fulcrum starts to develope a ridge with that oil groove.
I think it can start clicking. Usually a ping from ignition is when it is under a load, not idleing.
If you don't have a stethescope use some 1/2" or 3/8" hose, hold one end by your ear and hold the other over the suspected rockers. You can kind of "zoom in" on the source of the clicking.
There's no need to drain coolant when changing the intake manifold gasket on a 335-series (351C or 351M/400) engine. These engines have a "dry" intake manifold, with no coolant passages from the cylinder heads to the manifold.
To help prevent future leaks, either use gasket sealant on the standard neoprene end gaskets, or replace them completely with a thick bead of silicone.
In my old 81 the only way to get it to stop ticking was to put new rockers on it and then it was quiet. and about the intake gasket dont use the rubber end pieces use a good bead of black hi temp silicone

Another likely cause could be a collapsed lifter. If the plunger inside the lifter is stuck, the oil pressure can''t take up the valve clearance. It performs like a solid lifter instead.
