I have been hunting for carburetors lately and my uncle told me that he has a spare predator variable venturi You know one of those carbs that looks like a box. my question is would this be practical for my 400 that i wanna push around 400 horse as a daily driver?
I dont know anything about these carbs except theyre expensive and i can get one free.
"...Predator is designed for practically any application including Drag Racing, Circle Track, Mud Bogs, Boats, Off-Road, Tractor Pulls, Show Cars and Hill Climbs."
I'd take them at their word. If that kind of stuff sounds like your "daily driving" routine, then go for it.
well i found a pdf for a predator manual and it said that it had an air fuel mixture of like 13 to 1 instead of 14.5 to 1 which i think would make for less gas mileage, but would this point and a half really make a difference that would be noticable and could there be a way to make it 14.5?
i would jump at the chance!that 14.5:1 ratio or whatever is optimum balance, not necessarily the best for performance.i had a chance to test one,the throttle response was quite amazing.though i didn't figure the mileage.only two screws to turn, curb idle and idle mixture and that baby is set, adjusted and tuned.or you can jack off a holley for the rest of your days.i'm not sure what to recomend for an intake manifold-the predator is an open square shape on the bottom,i guess the only manifold carb base you wouldn't want would be a four hole flange.if your not gonna use it,send it on over.i got a nice place for it!
p.s. there have been upgrades over the years, some have "idle circuits"the ones i tested did not and had no idle problems at all. i ran 2 on a 2X4 tunnel ram on a cleveland, also tested 1 on a single top.no bog, flat spots, very smooth.the owner of the carbs ran 1 on a stock intake 460 in a 79 f150.might have had a spacer plate on it.the predator seems to like engines 350" and bigger, the 400" with its long stoke should be a good match.like i said, waste not want not-
