I have a 1979 351m. I installed an Edelbrock 2171 non egr manifold with a edelbrock 1406 4 barrel carb. I bolted the carb directly to the manifold with gasket. The carb mounting on the manifold is kind of thin. Was I suposed to use an addapter plate? Edelbrock identifies a 8714. My vacume guage is unstable. Thanks Art
...My performer came with a flat steel plate and two gaskets. I didn't use it however because it was an open design which would have left a little cross over area between the planes and wouldn't help idle. i just use the nice thick gasket (1/8" or so)not the thin paper ones. Also have a 4 hole spacer on top of that and don't seem to have any problems.
Be sure all the vacuum ports are connected or plugged in the carb. Also did you use the same ports for vacuum advance to the dizzy? You can use full time or ported.
Thanks for the reply. I did not use anything between the Carb and the manifold except for the thin gasket. I guess I must of lost the plate. I have been told it needs the plate! so I got a new one for $7.00. I will install it this weekend and I am sure it will help. Thanks Art
Alittle different point of view!!...I installed a 1 inch Phenolic spacer between my carb and performer manifold for (2) reasons , (1)it is supposed to improve low end torque and i believe it has , and (2) it is a great heat insulator between the carb and a very hot intake manifold and that is important as i live in Teas and its hot here about 7 months out of the year!!!........fd
