I got a timing light today and went out to try and use it.
So i made a mark on the 10 on the harmonic balancer, unplugged the spout, and fired up my truck which was already warm. It was pretty close lined up to what I think is the timing mark? It was like a metal piece over the balancer, i dont really know my haynes manual doesnt tell me ****. Can someone get me a picture of what the mark is supposed to be lined up with?
So anyway i get the line lined up and it runs great, smooth idle, and no shudder, so i shut it down, tighten the distributor, hook back up the spout, and fire her up a gain. It shudders a little like before and when i put the light on it, it is all spiratic, and the idle is kind of crappy.
The timing pointer is a triangle. Put the 10º BTDC mark on the point. You do have to be careful when you tighten the distributor back down, as it's easy to tweak it a bit. Once the SPOUT is back in, the timing will jump around a bit as the computer messes around with the advance. As for the idle roughness, both of mine were always a little lopey.
ok thanks, yeah i had it lined up with that triangle. This idle is bugging me, it makes the whol truck shudder, and sometimes it does it and other times it doesnt.
Yes i had the spout out. Its an 89. The spout is right by the distributor, its just a little bar you pull out of the plug. correct me if im wrong. Thanks for the picture skan, that makes me feel alot better, because thats what i was lining it up with.
Mine is doing the same thing. I just put a new motor in and I got it timed by ear and it has a light jerk to it at certin rpms. I am getting my timinglight back sat. and will shoot the timing. Does anyone have a pic of the spout yall are talking about. Ohh the cam I am running has a slight lope to it and I think that amplifies the problem.
a shudder usually means dirty injectors ( when i worked at the dealers ship.. ) SO if yours is recently tuned up.. maybe the injectors is dirty.. try diong a cleanup with seafoam... halve can trhu brake booster and halve can in the tank..
but for our old trucks its kind of normal.. mine does has kind of a small vibration when idling.. its normal i think
