truck ticks under any acceleration. Idles fine with a slight hint of ticking every now and then, nothing major. I have put it up on ramps and crawled all over this thing looking for a exhaust leak. donuts are good, manifolds are good, cant find any vaccum leaks, tested it and vaccum was 19 steady. sounds like its a lifter or exhaust leak? im not sure.. but when i try to determine where its coming from it seems like its the right side of the engine, maybe intake, maybe under valve cover...really im guessing. watch this video i made today (30 seconds) and hear it for yourself then let me know what you think... any ideas are appreciated, just bought the truck and supposidly it has a jasper engine with 50k on it, truck has 260k on it.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIMb1uhqshw
mines got the same noise situation going on, ive been told its a exaust leak up at the head gasket and i plan to replace that either this or next weekend, ill post in here if that fixes it
there is a tube that runs from your EGR to your intake manifold, they have a flex connection in them that usually breaks. I had that same noise. You have to pull the upper intake and you will be able to see where your break is then. it is a steel line about 1/2" diameter.
Mine does the exact same thing under the same conditions. I've checked the donuts but haven't had a chance to check the manifold. Last time I had the upper intake off I looked at the egr tube and it seemed to be alright.
Removing the upper intake isn't too hard. Just take your time. You'll need a torx bit for the intake bolt in the middle. I can't remember what size that bolt is off the top of my head. Make sure you get a new upper intake gasket set ($5 for a fel-pro set and you can't beat that.)
Six bolts in total. There is one that is tricky in the middle, I believe it is a allen key. You will need a long one to reach it bietween the gap in the center of the plenums. don't recall exactly what size it is right now.
To answer your question, No not really hard, but then again I dont know how much of a hands on mechanic you are.
ive had the truck 3 weeks, ive changed front/rear brakes, front bearings, all tie rods, front wheel bearings, spark plugs, rotor button, dis cap, rear end fluid/gasket, trans fluid and filter, oil and filter. do you think i could do the intake reasonably well? assuming it is the intake?? i agree it sounds like a exhaust like, anyone think it sounds like something inside of the motor? I dont think it is, just want all the advice i can get.. i like the idea of inhaling oil to make it smoke to maybe find the leak...any other suggestions?
The upper intake comes off in like 5 min. Ive had it off too much. Just get that long torx bit for the middle. There is 2 small coolant lines, vac hoses, throttle cable, intake tubes, and if you have the brace and ground on the side. My brace has long been rotted away. JUST be careful with the vac hoses, I have broke a few. Oh the ERG stuff i think mounts to 2 bolts on the top. That has long been gone on my truck also. It doesnt sound like anything in the engine. Just sounds like a small exhaust leak.
EDIT: Dont the hydraulic lifters take up the slack? I guess there can be more then it can comp for.
it was broken and leaking.. but mine was BADLY broken and leaking.. i could see it.. you may want to take it off and inspect it.. maybe the connection at the exhuast manifold is leaking.. all of those are posibilities...
