Hello all, I have a 79 351M. I found out the engine was in desperate need of a overhaul. Well anyway the motor is out and tore down to the block. I have ordered(waiting to receive) a comp cam 218*/218*, .494/.494 the kit comes with timing chain, lifters, springs, retainers and locks. I also order stock replacement pistons .030 over. This is my first V-8 overhaul so needing some advice. The cam bearings need to be replace, main bearings and rod bearings. The block will need to be bored .030. The pistons will need to be assembled also. I think my crank is good but might need turned. Not sure on what type of Head work will need to be done either, they Look like 2 black mud patties. Any ideas on how much $$ it will be at the shop and is there anything else i need to have them look at. I thought of having them put it together but i would like to assemble it for the experience and cost savings. This is a daily driver.:-staun
the $ question is probably best answered by your local shop of choice. is that the 268H? excellent choice, its a runner and works w/stock nonadjustable rockers.check your heads for a bump in the exhaust ports, you may want to get early heads w/out the bump.it's a water passage for the valve guide that earlier clev's and m's didn't have.a little blending in the bowls goes a long way as well as opening the exhaust port, but don't waste any money on the late restricted heads other than the standard valve job if you have to use them.on the block, pull all the plugs out, threaded and press in,hot tank, bore and torque plate hone, and have the shop check the crank. crank kits aren't that much, especially when it's already out.how bout a little stall?
Hey thanks for info. Yes it is the 268H cam and its a four speed. I will have to look at the heads to see if it has that notch you are talking about or not.

couldn't find anything in tom monroes book but remember reading that some factory seats were induction hardened and may have actually caused them to crack. i've never had any put in my heads FWIW
