Can anyone tell me what kind of generator or alternator my slick is originally supposed to have? As much info as you can give me on this part, I'd be greatly appreciative.
I had a 64 that had an alternator...64 was the transition yr for gen to alternators in the trucks...I had to replace it too...an absolute royal PITA to find too...as I recall it was an oddball to boot...a Leece Neville unit.
thats one truck Im kicking myself for selling...all original Ca truck...
Okay, thanks. The reason why I'm asking is because my generator (or alternator) died, and I bought a new alternator which will fit the truck from the local Advance Auto. I have the original wiring diagrams and everything so I can probably figure out how to install it, but I was just trying to get some background on what might have been equipped on the truck before.
I also have reason to suspect that the alternator I just pulled out was NOT one of the original either generator or alternators offered with the truck. It's a Delco Remy and the guy at Advance Auto looked it up and agreed that it wasn't original. The alternator he sold to me is of a rebuilt Motorcraft brand rated for 65 amps. He said that if I had the original alternator wiring, I would have been able to just bolt it and plug it in, but because someone had changed the wiring to fit this other alternator, I might have to do some rewiring work to get it to work appropriately. I'm just a bit confused.

First Ford with an alternator = 1963 Thunderbird.
All 1965 (Mustangs after 8/23/64) and later Fords have alternators.
Very few 1964 F100/350's have alternators...it was a special order only and was a different type (Leece-Neville, as mentioned above) than what was used on 1965 and later Fords (and 63/64 Birds), which were Auto-Lites thru 1970, when Ford used Motorcrafts.
Ford owned Auto-Lite, and was forced by the US Government to sell the company, because ppl accused Ford of having a monopoly.
Ford argued...what about GM's Delco Division? That fell on deaf ears.
Ford then started Motorcraft. Both Motorcraft and Auto-Lite part numbers are the same, as are all the parts.
NumberDummy, could you tell me what years and trucks had the SAME voltage regulator. I'm wondering if a '65 would have the same as '64.
The guy at AdvanceAuto told me that this was so, and he gave me a GP Sorenson VR301 regulator which was listed under '65 but wasn't listed under '64 F100's. However, I looked into my shop manual and it looks like the same exact part, with all the same leads and indication.
Sweet, I got my new alternator to work! After staring at a bunch of wiring diagrams for a little while, I figured out what I had to do.
It does work great, and it actually helped solve a LOT of problems I was having with starting. For example, now the truck, even when fully warmed up, cranks over easily. Before the starter motor could barely turn it over, due to the engine compression, but now with the new alternator, it gets the battery and starter enough to power to start easily every time.
