Generator to Alternator Q's

Hey again. I recently bought a Jeep, '49 CJ-3A. It's a flathead 4 and runs great other then the charging system. It has a generator and I was looking to swap to alternator. I'm told you can upgrade a certain alternator to make it work, but now we have these new one-wire alternators. Can I just buy a 1-wire Ford alternator, like 60-100amp and just swap it in? I really am not to familiar with these systems. I was told I may need to swap light bulbs that can handle a 12v system. The Jeep was previously rewired and has a fuse block with the newer blade fuses. So... what can be done, should I get an AC Delco alternator and upgrade it, or can I just buy one??

Thanks guys

Firstly is your jeep not a 12volt system?

If it is 12 volt, you can make a 1 wire work just by removing the stock voltage regulator. You may have to add in a wire to the charge light on the dash. It's usually connected to the field wire and if you apply 12v it should stay off.

I was told it was a 6v system, but it has a regular car battery. I haven't hooked a meter up to it yet, which I will. Now the light under the dash, what is this wiring you are talking about?? Adding a wire will just give power to the light to keep it off?? What is the field wire? Do I splice into it or what? Thanks again

I am only guessing that you have a light that tells you your not charging the battery. If you do have it, you just have to apply 12 volts from the alternator to keep it turned off. Field is the terminal that energizes the magnetic field the stator spins in, if this terminal is energized then the alternator light stays off.

You should see a field terminal on the stock voltage regulator, one wire should run back towards the dash and this is the one that you may need to apply 12v to.

Gotch, ok beautiful. I'll go scope things out and get to work. If I run into any more problems, you'll be hearing from me again.

Thanks again
