OD Button Not Workin. Ideas...

My OD button hasnt been workin and that is drivin me NUTS. Every time i go down a hill i would kick it to off so it would drop a gear and slow me down. Next best thing to an exhaust brake. Now it wont work, sometimes if i play with it enough, it will work, but then its stuck off, and im revin it really high to do the speed limit. I tore the covers off the steering column, and the little clip where the two 3 wire harness' join seem alright. Im thinkin maybe its the button. Hows the end of the shifter come off....does it just pry off? I am thinkin if worse comes to worse i am goin to get a on/off button with alight and just get a new harness and run the switch on the dash. The button on the end of the shifter is sorta of a pain anyways. Think that might work? Any ideas of what else to look for? Thanks

I had to replace the wires that ran from the button to the switch, they had worn through. And yes the button gently pry's off (mine now has superglue)

The wires usually break where they enter the shifter handle inside the steering column. A new shifter handle is about $50, or you can fix the wires.

If you go to a separate switch don't get an on/off switch. It should be a normally open momentary contact switch.

I replaced the whole shifter, wires broke in shifter. Mine was stuck OD on position (no light). I have the classic missing end of shifter (cap with whole in it).

I popped the end off, and pulled the little button switch out. Its not the switch, as it works in the other ford. I took my test light, and the one plug in, the top one, is hot, on both trucks, the other two bottom wires that are close together show nothin. I am thinkin is must be in the linkage where it broke. Will have to go and see how bad im goin to get ripped off to buy a new shifter arm and wire harness.

How hard is it to put the new shifter arm on?

My OD lights also does not come on. It never worked when I bought it. Just an idea, but would the trailer brake box have anything at all to do with this or not? I would not think they are related but I did not install the brake box and I am just curious if the two are any way related?

I had to replace the shifter. The wires that run down to the column and very small and have very little room to repair. I replaced mine, but I don't remeber it being that costly.

The back of my shifter was rubbing on the plastic steering wheel housing. This rubbed my wires until they broke. I cut additional clearance for the shifter, soldered the wires back to gether and all has been good. careful taking off the cap, the tabs break easy....
