If you do go ahead with the 460/429 it will be really tuff to get it to pass emissions here in CO. Especially the visual. "No sir the block just swelled when it got wet". I would just stick with the 400 it is a good block. That's my 2 cents anyway.
If it won't start, put a 460 in it.
If it burns oil, put a 460 in it.
If it get's bad mileage, put a 460 in it.
If you don't know Jack about the potential of the 351M/400 and don't want to learn, put a 460 in it.
If you don't mind tearing your hair out and beating your head into the wall every time it's due for a smog inspection, put a 460 in it.
If you want over 1.8HP per cu using production cast iron heads, with out nitrous or forced induction, don't put a 460 in it.
Wait a minute isnt a 460 a big block cause the 400 is a small block and I know they bolt up narly identical. Think about the efficiency. I dont know what to say but in my opinion fabricating parts is something left to professional machinists. Honestly you can save money doing it yourself but if you dont have the tools to do it, why? I think some people masy be to obsessed with HP but it doesnt matter if you cant get it on the ground.
MATT we are talking FORDS HERE not chevy's a 400 is a big block!!!!now chevy has a 400 small block and big block (402) and the fabricating is just the motor mounts get a set of 390 motor mounts turn them sideways and cut the corner off and mae your hole bigger on the stool or I have may found the perfect mount for this conversion I bought a 68 429 and it has mounts like a truck I will fill you all in later if this works out right. the exhaust he will have to take to the muffler shop and if he looks around on a liclon with a 460 like a 76 he could put all the smog off of it on his bronco. 400 = big block and he will get the power to the ground FORDS always look better when pulling a CHEVY
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jan-03 AT 06:03 PM (EST)]Dont get me started on c****'*! I have a 351M engine in my truck I can even see it from here. I know that the engine in it is a small block engine. It is physically identical to the 400M engines. which makes a 400M a small block right? correct me if I am mistaken. I am sure that sampsin could easily place a 429 or a 460 in that bronco. Dont get me wrong I like Fords but the 429 and 460 are gasoholics. If you want good power and torque but you dont want to spend your paycheck trying to pay for the gas. Go with the 400. If you decide that you want more power then go with a 429 or a 460. I am thinking that you would save a lot of money if you only had to buy a block that way you could use your existing parts on the short block and you would not have to buy new stuff to put on the engine all sampsin needs is the block and as VGENGOOMS said a 429 or a 460 might not pass emissions inspections in Colorado. I dont really know because we dont have emissions inspections here in Montana. I am glad he is getting a pretty good picture of the situation.
OK the 335 Series (351C,351m/400) Ford is listed as a Small Block (Chevy Term)Due to it's bore spacing.. Now we all know the 351c has a Small block (302,351w) bellhousing pattern, And the 351m/400 has the Big block (429,460) Bellhousing pattern.
Now you can take the Heads from a 351c and place them on everything from the 302,351w,351c,351m/400... But they won't fit on the 429/460
so the 351m/400 is a Small Block (Chevy Term)...
Enough Said........

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Jan-03 AT 01:14 AM (EST)]Thanks for all the info and opinions.
About the emmisions, I've gotten a couple of differing opinions on whether I could pass with the 429/460 swapped in.
One guy said "you can swap in the 460 and still pass in denver. I have a 460 in my 79 and its even registered as a 460 and all I did was build the motor put the smog on and take it down and it passes. Just don't build it wild or it'll never pass."
Another said "Legally, you can't swap in an engine older than your vehicle is. I'm not entirely sure when the 429 was stopped being made, but I'm sure it was before '78. BUUuuuuttt, since CO doesn't look under the hood before '82, you're good to go with whatever you choose......hell, you could even have a 6-71 blower sticking out of the hood, and it'll still get tested"
There is also the post above which makes the point about could they tell the difference between the 400 and the 460.
Matt you make some great points. I not sure I want to build a gasoholic but I do want to have some power. How much of a difference in gas mileage are we talkin about? I don't have a point of reference(the engine was dead when I bought this project truck). I don't expect great gas mileage out of a bronco(has the aerodynamics of a brick), but I don't want to spend my paycheck to drive it either.
tell any body that ask (inspectors) that it is a 460 and they will never know the differnce I still say 400m is a big block I want a recount hehehheheh
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Jan-03 AT 05:48 PM (EST)]I have a friend with a 460 in a (75 i think) that is getting approximately 4 miles to the gallon in the city (wherever that is heheheheh) and about 6 miles to the gallon on the highway. I am saying that he does tow once in a while but he is pretty friendly on the gas. My 400 is getting about 16 in the city and 18 on the highway and i tow a bit. I also have flowmaster headers and crane fireball Hi-6 ignition with a blaster 2 coil and a MSD distributor and racing wires. all of that helps with gas mileage. as far as power goes I can leave a nice burnout with 800 pounds of sand in the back. while you are down at the junk see if you can find some rods from a ford 300cid inline six obviously you are going to need two you can have your crank turned to 4.170 this will give you a few more cubes and a lot more torque "it will make a real stump puller" you said you planning a rebuild so why not have a little fun and make a stroker! this is an option you wont lose mpg and give you more power. have fun and good luck remember to scour those yards i am sure you have quite a few yards around denver:-)
whooooooooooaaaaaaaaa thats sucks hmmmmmmm lets see my dads 460 with 373 gets 12- 15 mpg (but my dad plays with the 4 barrel) the only mods it has is a rering kit a 550 elderbrock 4 barrel regular plugs and wires and dual 12inch glass pack exhuast, sounds like you freind need to get rid of that 460 or fix it right.
