Chronic 460 water pump problem?

My 1988 F-250 460 decided to start dripping lots of coolant. Took it into the shop, figuring it was the water pump. It's the water pump AND the timing chain cover, seems the coolant flows through the timing chain cover on its way to the water pump. The timing chain cover is made out of aluminum, and I hate bolting aluminum to iron and expecting them not to leak after a while. Is my timing chain cover leak rare, or is it a chronic problem? My truck only had 86,000 miles on it.

Your problem is rare. The 460 I have had a hole in the timing cover, but a plate covers over the hole preventing coolant from flowing through it. I used some JB Weld to cover the hole just to prevent oil from splashing up onto the backing plate of the water pump. Don't worry about your problem, it is a rare case.
