What is the diffence in V10 hp ratings
Yeah I guess I bought the preproduction (best built) one they used to show the execs and shareholders before they rolled the others ones out! But seriously sorry for the slip I have too many vehicles (confused it with the mini van) I "guess" it has to be a 00 then and thanks I will check the heads. Does it matter if its the drivers or passenger side head?

"PI" is cast into the head. Below is a pic. (Looks like the Passenger Side Head)

1999 6.8 non-PI heads need more HP!
Agian, I must have been looking in the wrong column on the Ford web site. Still, that is a pretty big increase. I was wondering if there was an easy way to et more hp out of my V10 for towing my trailer without losing relilabilty. I thought a newer factory stuff might be the trick. But if you have to change out the heads and all the stuff that goes with it, it might be not be worth the money.
Add On's: Street and Strip throttle body spacer, an S&B cold air intake with oiled filter, a Hypertec Max Energy Tuner.
I do have slightly larger tires than stock on. 285/75 16's and a stock exhaust with the Ram horn y pipe.
I have wanted to get a set of the p.I. heads and intake, which I know will help as well as headers and a dual exhaust. How difficult is it to swap the heads on that ol pig? I have a 76 F150 with the 390 FE that was freshly rebuilt with approx 1000 miles on it. It has been in the family since 1977. my 99 only has 130k with 98% of thosemiles on it are highway miles. And I have always used the Mobile 1 full synthetic oil. I use it mainly for hauling my atv and a 30' hard side camp trailor. I mainly run into (sad to say this but..) the gutlesness of the thing pulling up over hills and the MANY passes we have here in S. E. Idaho. Anyway, I am so tempted too pull my 390 and put that into the 99. The 390 would pull circles around that 6.8. I have had Hypertec update the tuner and I have it set to the best non-racing tune I have gotten yet. But it comes down to changing the heads and possibly a twin turbo setup. I am asking for the best possible hp increase for the money. Being on disability, there isn't much cash available at this point. Thank You!
1999 V10...275hp around 400 ft lbs torque (2-valve)
2000-2004 V-10...310 hp @4250 rpm, 425 ft/lb torque @3250 rpm (2-valve)
2005 up V-10...362 hp @4750 rpm, 457 ft/lb torque @3250 rpm (3-valve)
In 2000-2004 the 2V V10 got "PI" head or Performance improved that bumped up power quite a bit especially above 3k rpm. The heads increase flow quite a bit. Late production 02'-04' V10 got extra threads in the spark plug hole.
2005 Up V10 got an Extra Valve per cylinder (3 valves instead of 2) and a varible volume intake manifold, more "Headerlike" exhaust manifolds and a freer flowing exhaust. (Without the crappy y-pipe like on the 00-04)
I'm shure some tuning was done to optimize the changes, but not too much.

2005 Excursions made due with the same 2V 6.8 as earlier years.
I too am in desperate need of more HP from my '99 6.8 F350. I know it doesn't have the P.I heads or intake but I have added a few extras to try to squeeze out more power!

I'm convinced the single best thing you can do for the 6.8 performance wise is to go with deeper gears. When I swapped my factory 3.73s for a set of 4.88s it was like I had a completely new truck, it towed our 9,500lb TH like a locomotive compared to how it was stock.
Forgot to answer the other question: They hold up pretty well. Mine's got almost 100,000 miles of weighing ~17,000 pounds completely empty under it's belt and still fires up and runs happily every time! They do have problems from time to time like any engine, but they don't really have any really widespread terrible chronic issues except maybe exhaust manifold bolts snapping.
