inconsistent running engine

Yea I know internet trouble shooting sucks. But it atleast it puts me down the right direction. The gas in the tank is new now. I think that it wreaked havoc on the carb tho. The PO tried to get it running and I am thinking the carb sucked up a bunch of garbage fuel. I am gonna be on vacation next week so I m hoping I will get it good, plus I will have some more money to throw at it. What is a dwell meter????

how would a dwell meter help me. I have electronic ignition... A buddy of mine gave me a rebuilt carb so I am gonna try and put that on there. If my problems are fixed awesome. If not it's gonna help me narrow it down.

so I saw a good deal on craigslist. Its a mallory comp 9000 unilite breakerless ignition dizzy. $60 bucks so I went and bought it. I am gonna hook it up. On the way home from picking it up I was looking at it. It has no spot for vac advance. I read about it and it automatically advances 24* at 3200 rpm's What will this mean/do on my pickup?
what are the 3 wires coming out of the stock dizzy? purple black orange + - ground what cause I have been searching how to hook this guy up and no dice? Both dizzys have 3 wires just dont know what to hook up to what!

ok so after a while of searching I have figured it out, I think. the ford harness goes as such black=ground, orange=+, wiolet=-, and on the mallory dizzy brown=ground, red=+, and green=-. If I am wrong can y'all help me out!
