It was down to 0 degrees today here when I left work and she wouldn't start. I cycled the glow plugs repeatedly but still no go. Finally a co-worker gave me a ride to Autozone and I bought a can of starting fluid. He sprayed a small shot of it into the intake tube while I was cranking it and it fired off. I hate to do that cuz I've seen diesel engines get addicted to this stuff but I had to do something to get home. I'm just wondering what kind of damage can this stuff do?
In a PSD it can be a terrible EXSPLOSIVE experience .If your glowplugs are working they can ignite the ether any time they are on .If you must use it disconnect the power to you glow plugs. It sounds like you may have a few glowplugs not working.
Yes and no, Wd-40, not starting fluid. Ether + glowplugs = BANG!
I cold-start my truck (in sig) with starter fluid but have no glowplugs. If you must use 'ether' then see to it you did it like you did... With the motor rolling over, it takes two people, spray it as the engine is turning over.
I'd bank you did NO damage since the motor was rolling when sprayed it.
Starting fluid has a much higher flash point than even that of gasoline, and causes extreme pressure in places that is not designed for it. The more you use, the higher the pressure is. It can stretch your head bolts, blow off your valve cover, ruin your combustion chamber and a few other nice goodies you don't even want to think about. Many people have used it many times and suffered no ill effects, but it is not allowed anywhere near my truck!!
