At our RM meeting on Friday one of the other councillors and our administrator had their new flex fuel trucks there. Both are very new but the times when its on four cylinders the instantaneous fuel mileage numbers are quite amazing. It should boost mileage considerably. I think this design goes 4 cylinder / 8 cylinder only. In the 1980's my Uncle had a Cadillac with 4/6/8 technology. It was deadly reliable, gave good mileage, and was seamless in power delivery!
My dad has a new chey van and he is happy with the gas mileage but, his neigbor down the road has one and he is very unhappy with the mileage he is getting. According to dad he has gone back to driving his old pickup.
i've spoken with 3 owners of the new chevies and none are recording mileage to write home about. 2 of them started off with 10-15 real pen on paper readings, now hitting the high teens, sometimes 20. the other has pulled consistantly 15 city, 18 highway. its a real good idea, the multi-displacement system, but its no better than sliced bread in my mind.
If those CAFE fuel mileage targets are ever implemented they will have to try all types of things - just like all the emissions stuff on the newer diesels. All this stuff is okay when on warranty but the long term cost to run the complexity will change the used vehicle market in the future!
I would hope so. Headgaskets/aftermarket studs, new oil cooler, EGR cooler (wich is now not getting any exhaust gas), new thermostat, water pump, 2 alternators, EGR valve, various sensors, etc, and turbo. That was warranty stuff but I am off that stuff now!
I have been keeping my eyes open for a couple year old Dmax. Now that its all been fixed up I will keep it as long as it behaves but will not give it another chance!!
My current 6.0 and a few that my friends have have left me with a bad taste for this engine. A swap isnt my cup of tea. I need reliability for the 40000 kms I make a year and I dont have time to make my daily driver a project vehicle. The Dmax isnt perfect by a long shot but from my observation of the guys running them around here, they are by far a better bet than the 6.0.
Speaking of unfortunate 6 liter problems, my friend from work that has the 95 king ranch that just got a ton of work done to it, just sent his truck back to the shop. He hasnt even put 300 kms on it since the last time it was in there and somethings messed with the injectors.
As much as I personally would rather drive a ford, the duramax's arent that bad. Maybe try looking for a good ol 7.3 liter before ya go to the dark side!
do you mean '05 prep?? as i hear it straight from a crew of diesel tech's, the 05-07 6.0's are real decent runners. of course it is only machinery and problems will happen, but i don't see the solution being switching brands. better the devil you know than the devil you don't.
true enough i guess. when i'm ready to buy heavy, it'll be the v10. almost bit on a '99 dually today, v10 auto 4x4, 150k on it. premium shape for 15900. only thing is the '99's had the plug spitting problem so i'll steer clear of that one. sweet truck though!!
