Unhappy '66 Truck Pulls Left

Hey fellas~
I am new here, but I have a question for you guys: My truck is pulling hard left whenever I brake and it has just started to make an aweful rubbing or grinding noise when turning right.

I replaced the drums, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, hoses from the frame to the wheel cylinders, shoes, self-adjusting kits, re-greased my bearings, and replaced the axle seals...all the way around. Thus, I am at a loss as to why it has started to pull to the left. The other odd thing is that the left drum is the only drum that gets hot while driving.

I read the post about this same issue a couple of weeks ago (except his pulls right) and I have done everything that was said about trying to fix the problem. I have adjusted by shoes like said, made sure my shoes are facing the right direction, checked my tire pressure, and I even checked my hoses to ensure there was not a kink in one of them.

I am totally amiss as to what is going on fellow ford men...please give me some of your sage wisdom and help a fellow Ford F100 brother out!

Thanks fellas!

My only experience that sounds close was not having the bearings tightened enough. Things get sloppy (noisey) real quick and vibrate when the bearings are not where they should be. Are you sure that when you put the brake shoes on you got them in the right place? One shoe is longer and wider than the other and may drag. Hope this helps...................and WELCOME.

Pulls left when braking and left drum warm/hot means the left brake is working and the right is not or very little... or the left is working too much...

possible culprits of right not working:

plugged line/hose to the right side
stuck wheel cyl on the right side (even new can be defective)

possible culprit of left side over working:
wheel bearing grease on the shoes makes it sticky and grab...
wheel cyl leaking makes the same sticky mess and makes the brake grab...

The problem has to be in the front drivers side wheel, especially if the drum is getting hot. Suggest lift front end, this way you can spin the wheel, move steering mechanism from side to side, basically pull, push, or what ever it takes to apply pressure to components. Bleed them again to determine if getting a good flow, no fluid blockage. Couple occasions, particularly after packing wheel bearings it took several miles for the bearings and shoes to seat after initial adjustment. Same to rear if don't find the problems. Out of the number of times I have replace brake shoes on my 65 the last time I replace the rears, must have left the rear adjustment too loose apparently a part from the self adjustment component came off and by the time I fiqured it out the part was carbon dust along with the drum and shoes.

May want to check the I Beam stabilizer bushing on the frame. Not sure the actual arm is called. These get soft over time.

But I think you either have a cylinder stuck and not working so It will be on the right side like Sawsall suggested. I had 2 rear ones completely corroded up on my 68. New cylinders and complete brake flush to get rid of any fluid fixed the problem.

May want to check your rear leaf spring shackles to make sure the rear axle is not moving around.

Hey Guys,
I bled the lines to the right side, readjusted both sides and it still pulls like a bear! I am really confused! How would I know whether or not I had a bad wheel cylinder there? I am starting to think that might be the case, but I am still in school and thus do not have a ton of time to assess stuff like this other than during my study break time! haha! I thank you all for helping with sugestions and I would appreciate as many as you guys have got! thanks!

KILLER'S_60&66

P.S. The wheel cylinders are all new, but maybe there was a bad one???

I will check my rear leaf spring as well! thanks!

Killer look inside of the rear wheels to see if is wet looking. I wonder if you might have a seal leaking and your new shoes are wet with axle lube.

Hey fellas~
I finally got the problem with the truck pulling left upon braking taken care of. The neighbor lady paid for me to have it taken to her mechanic that she uses for her cherry '59 vette and they found out that the hubs the idiot before me had put on were the wrong ones. They also found the wrong bearings and may have done something else. I have not gotten to drive the old boy yet due to me being in school all week and it being at home with my folks. Anyway, just wanted to let you fellas know that it really drive true and straight according to my father now. Just goes to show that every detail must be looked at when buying a old slick. It also helps to be a nice fella and treat your neighbors well becuase they can really bless you in the long run. She paid for it all and promised to never let me know how much it cost!

I love the pics...I tried looking at your public profile and it kept saying page cant be found...it works on others...Im wondering if theres still a few bugs to be worked out on the updating of the site.
As for the trucks...both are great trucks to be proud of...And as for your neighbor paying for the repairs...theres not enough that can be said for good karma. If she has known ya for a very long time then you know what I mean as its prolly not the first time she has helped you ...but just not to this extent. As for repaying her...Mothers Day is coming up...I would definately do something for her...she is a true gem through and through :-)

Drop me a note...I think we live close to each other if the plates on the 59 are current...
