Got a 97 Eight cylinder, that intermittently (not all the time, but enough times to be annoying) that has the bell ringing all the time, and the exterior bed lights and interior lights on with "door ajar" warning light lit up until the 5 minute delay finally shuts it off. Anyone know how to fix this problem?
This is a very common problem with these trucks but very simple to fix, the door switch is located in the door jam, its not where you might think. Its inside the latch on the door (the end of the door where the handle is). Simply spray a generous amount of spray lubricant into the latch and your problem will disapear. I found this out from my dealer. I keep a can in my truckbox and give it a shot about once a month or so, and have not had another problem. I hope this helps.
This is happening to my 99 also. when you say spray it in the latch do you mean the part that holds the door closed. Sorry to sound so goofy on this but I dont know if you mean through the handle or the actual latch. thanks

Yes right in the latch, not the handle. The switch is part of the mechinism and gets dust and dirt in it. You can use WD-40 or any other spray lube and your problem will go away. My FORD Dealer gave me a can of lithium grease spray but said that any spray lube would work. Good Luck.
Thank you so much, I was having the same problem with my 97 F150 and was about to bring it to the dealership for servicing. I sprayed it with WD40 and it worked instantly. Thanks again for saving me the time and money of having to bring it in.
