run engine with trans off?

I have a '85 302 NP435 transmission. There is an oil leak that I am pretty sure is coming from the transmission, but not COMPLETELY certain. Is it safe to run the engine with the tranmission off to make sure its not the rear main leaking? Can I push in the clutch safely to start the engine?

Thanks,
Casey

I wouldn't push the clutch down, as it will allow the disc to slip off center. This could cause a vibration, and if the disc gets too far off center, it could actually damage either the disc or pressure plate.
Either bypass the clutch switch, or start it at the solenoid.
If you are removing the clutch/pressure plate, and have a hydraulic clutch assembly, you certainly do not want to depress the clutch pedal while the clutch is off the engine.

Thanks for the info. I am mostly concerned with the clutch aspect. I'll start it from the solenoid.
