Question Clutch petal return spring question

I need some ideas on the best way to remove the clutch petal return coil spring on my '86 f150. My Ford service manual said: "Remove spring". That's it!
I am hesitant to stick a large screwdriver up there and start cranking away! I dont want to break too much stuff or put out an eye with a flying spring!
Any help appreciated!

Look at a spring tool to remove spring in the door hinge.... It's a simple little cuss, but you have to have it.
I've replaced the entire pedal assembly, but not just that spring.

Thanks for the response but I am unable to locate a "spring removal tool" at any local tool outlets.

Any other ideas or "try using a ....."?? would be appreciated!

Clamp on to the long side of the straight section with a large vise-grip and pull. That way you still have control of the spring.

talking about the big coil spring up in there? Just push the clutch pedal all the way down, grab it, and yank it out.

Pushing the pedal down relieves the pressure off of it almost completely.

Thanks all for your input. I will post back with an update.
Currently I have the spring out and I'm working on removing the clutch rod. It seems like the pedal attachment to the rod is stripped or worn. This is preventing a full stroke of the clutch petal and causing hard shifting.

the pushrod is part of the MC. You have to remove them together to rebush the pushrod.

When i rebushed mine a standard thinwall bushing fits in the pushrod hole, and i replaced the pin on the cluth pedal with a clevis pin. I don't recall what size the parts are, but they're standard hardware store fare.

pretty much get a thinwall bushing that fits the pushrod, then grab a clevis pin that fits inside the bushing. getting the old pin out is the fun part.

Yes it looks like removal of that clutch rod in imposable without further disasembaly of the dash and pedal box bolted to the firewall!! the rod slides over eaisily enough but hits the firewall before exiting the box.

I put the whole mess back together until its warmer and I have a bit more time to tear stuff up.

The good news is I found a pretty slick way to replace that clutch petal return coil spring. I compressed it on the work bench with a large slip joint plyers and kept it compressed with a couple plastic zip ties. It fit in the opening under the dash perfectly, then I clipped the ties with a side cutter.

Thanks to all who chimed in with ideas!
