My son works in a metal shop, and we think we can make the bed sides, end, rear cross member all 16 gauge. We are going to make one for the 54. We can make more at the same time.
We will be using a tube/pipe for the bed rolled edges, stake pockets but no stake pocket holes, and are considering the rear stake pocket edge to be flush with the rear bed edge. If we do this and the pipe roll, then not much is left open (like the teardrop edge)..
He lives near Dallas, east side.
We think we can do this for around $500, which is $200 less than Midfifty's Basic bed. Course, we can't/won't ship them.
We might be able to make the flat dual sided tailgate as well.
I'm not understanding the pipe roll at the top of the bed side. Are you welding tubing to the top of the angled section or ? Are the stake pockets just a rectangular section? Do you happen to have any sketchs or pictures of what you plan to build? Thanks.
