I have a 16" that does soemthing like 1700CFM that I got for a song. Figured I could pair that with a 10" I have and could get some movement, but BY JONES that stock fan moves some air.
Sometimes I swear the fan pulls the truck along just as much as the tires push it.
My big concern with a electric fan would be that it would be pulling air over the entire radiator. That wouldn't concern me, as long as it kept the motor cool, but I have both a oil and a tranny cooler on either side of the radiator, and I wouldn't be able to get the electric to cover both..
So who's running electric? See any MPG bonus? Temps ok?
I would think a good fan shroud would help pull air through the entire radiator surface and get the other coolers.
Im curious too as to what gains you can get from an electric fan and how do you hook it up electrically.....meaning how does it know when to kick on? I assume theres some sort of thermostatic control.
AND while we are at it...would an electric water pump be good for every day use? Milage/hp gains.
I've been told over and over and over again to expect a very small MPG increase.
I bought a thermal controler along time ago, but never ended up getting a fan. Now I'm contemplating getting the fan just because I somehow lost my current fan shroud over the past year, and have a bit of a heat issue.
Thread's a little old but I thought I'd put in my 2 cents. It's a reasonably common mod among Ford smallblock owners to install the electric fan from a 3.8 Taurus. Those things move alot of air. I did that conversion to my 83 Thunderbird using a fan I got in the junkyard for like $15 and a cheap fan controller from the parts store. Also upgraded my alternator to a 3G because the fan is a power hog but overall it worked out well and the fan does an excellent job of keeping my 302 cool. I'm considering doing the same thing on my 460 when I have time, though I may try getting a Lincoln Mark VIII fan, same motor but 18" as opposed to 16". Oh and they come as an assembly with a shrowd.
Where are you at in VA? I'm putting together a 460 for my mud truck and have seen you over on 460Ford. I could use some help in getting this thing together and have it done right! That is if your close and interested...
