LAST EDITED ON 29-Jun-00 AT 08:13 AM (EST)[p]My 83 E350 RV has occasional severe fuel starvation, mostly on hot days and high altitude (9-11k feet). Someone said the fuel diverter valve (in the fuel line near the carb) was opening up and dumping max fuel back to the tank and the electric fuel pump didn't have enough volume to feed the carb adequately in this condition. I added a '70 Lincoln mechanical fuel pump in hopes of gaining volume and haven't tested this yet.
Can anyone tell me about this fuel diverter valve? How to test? Is it gradual open/closed or full on/off only?
Also, the gas tank builds a lot of pressure and the replacement cap is not vented (Colorado emissions test says the cap must hold pressure to pass). Ideas or comments? Thanks.
If the truck were mine, I would use a vented cap and switch to the non-vented cap for emissions tests and inspections. You might try posting this question on the '61-79 board. You might get a few more ideas there.
