Headstud questions

I am probably going to put some studs in soon. I was wondering what kind of boost can I run with the factory turb and some tuning from Matt? Also, What kind of ower can be made with the stock injectors? Is the Ultra Comp tune from Matt about the limit or is there more to be discovered with the studs? Thanks

Kyle

Its not the boost thats gonna hurt ya, its the cylinder pressure. from what I understand from matt the 3 ways to get more power (and cylinder pressure) are timing, fueling, and turbo air..timing being the worst. There can be more discovered with the ultra comp but your gonna need to address other issues first, like fueling( fass system and a return regulated system) and like you said cylinder pressure(studs).

I would just go ahead and get it out of your system when you go to do your headstuds and get everything that your wanting done as most shops will only charge you labor for the studs, if you are having a shop do it. However, if your wanting to run more aggressive tunes you are going to have to address fueling(rather it be with an aftermarket fuel pump and/or injectors) and then of course you'll have to deal with the air part of the equation. It's never ending, but I would get it out of your system all at once(if funds and desire willing) as that would be the cheapest if you plan to do those mods, even though it might not feel that way at first.

Unfortunately right now, I can only afford the studs and I am goin to do the labor myself. I was just wondering if the factory fuel system can keep up with more boost or not. My buddy has an 06 Cummins and he put the boost fooler on it and is now running about 45-50lbs of boost with plenty of fuel with a tuner only. I know its not a 6.0, but I was wondering if it is similar for the 6.0?

I wouldn't run that with the stock turbo, it might be safe, but that just makes me exceptionally nervous, but then again Matt will tell you that I'm a big worry wart. I'm leary of those boost fooler, boost annihilator and stuff like that I worry about what that is going to do because in my mind it's like modules, it uses trickery to accomplish it's goals and I just think in the end it might ruin something(but that is just me, it might all be fine as all get out).

I am wondering what the stock turbo can make and is it beneficial without an aftermarket fuel system. I don't plan on buying a boost fooler or anything, I would just have Matt write me a custom tune. Is there enough fuel supplied with the factory system to support that much boost?

In order to run that much boost, I think you will have to up the fuel pressure with atleast a fuel regulator, and then you'll want to run a pressure gauge in the cab to see if your asking for more fuel then that stock pump is able to put out, ITP recommends 60 psi and overtime that might wear that pump down even with stock injectors). The factory system itself is not running enough pressure to prevent dead heading on the injectors, i doubt that it's running enough pressure to make it useful to try to push the stock turbo with as much boost as your wanting to. I would definately ask Matt about that, but just from my meager knowledge of diesel performance that is how it seems to me.

FASS and Airdog. I see more people using the FASS. I think the FASS' starter model is around 575$

I'm using the FASS 150/180 which is for extreme modification, they do have others that supplement the factory pump. If you think you'll eventually go bigger on the injectors then go ahead and get the bigger one, if you think you'll stay where you are then get the ones that help out the factory pump.
