I was driving my 04 F350 6.0 Powerstroke after it had been sitting for a week. In a very short period of time the "Check Gage" light was on and the factory trans temp gage showed maxed out in high. I shut down and left the vehicle and picked it up later. After about 10 minutes driving it did it again so I finished the way home and shut down.
I have 77k miles and am guilty of not changing trans fluid. I am assuming I have the 5 speed 5R as it has the Towing feature on the shift lever.
My question is, has anybody had a similar problem. I just picked up a new internal and external filter and fluid to change. Also, is the warranty 100k like on the engine.
Thank you all for the info. I fought the Michigan cold and changed the internal and external filter. I flushed but did not measure in detail as recommended but got through it. Still had the problem and based on the last two replies I am hoping it is the sensor. Because it is 4 degrees out and I do not know where the sensor is I dropped the truck at a dealer (Trucks only) and will keep the KY handy.
This board has saved me many $$ and time so the rare trip to the dealer can be tolerated. Thanks again for the feedback.
The OEM gage is pretty much worthless as an indicator. I have DiPricol gages, the dash will read "Normal" within minutes of starting up, the DiPricol takes a while to even get into indicating range(100*F minimum). Same goes for coolant temp, but not quite as bad. In a case like this the gages serve as a cross check on the dash.
I took it to Motor City Ford, a truck dealer in Livonia, MI. It was the sensor and it was just over $300 for all the work. I am sure I could have done it but with the snow and cold I made the sacrifice. Learned a lot from all the posters so it was still positive.
Hey, I'm old enough that I would seriously consider paying someone $300 so I din't have to lay on my back in 3 degree weather and change a sensor out. 30 years ago I would have done it myself but these days....not so much.

I hear ya on that one! Hell I even considered having someone change my alternator...but the wife cracked the whip....and I had to do it myself.
