I just had a 460 built for my 70 F150. I kept the compression at about 9.1-1. I used a medium sized cam, nothing to big. I have an edelbrock performer RPM intake and 750 carb. The problem I have is that I can't seem to get the carb tuned in. The motor only has about 60 miles on it. Which rods and jets do I need to put in it? Or do I need to let the motor break-in a little more before I mess with it? Right now it runs good until you step into it. Then it backfires through the carb and runs rough until it catches its breath. The motor feels strong but I dont now where to start. The timing is now at about 8 degrees. Does anyone have any suggestions?
After rebuilding your carburetor and setting it where you want it(jets, rods & etc.). I'd bump the timing up to 12-13 degrees BTDC, maybe higher if your cam has more duration(225 or higher @ .050). I'd also look into setting the advance rate of your distributor 12-13' initial, 34-36' total all "IN" by 2300-2500 RPM. You can go a little more initial with less mechanical/vacuum advance, the advance canister on the distributor usually has an allen type screw inside where vacuum line attaches which allow adjustments of vacuum advance. Inside the distributor, under the "base" plate, are where your mechanical advancement springs are located. Experimentation with different color springs to get the advance curve you want, the springs are different colors because of the differences in there tensions when installed.
It will be trial & error for a while until you get it where you want it with no detonation.
I hope this helps in any way.
