I am in Brooklyn <st1:State w:st="on"><st1lace w:st="on">New York</st1lace></st1:State> and I am trying to find a reliable source to install new tires on my 1953 truck. I recently purchased new tires. I have gone to 4 different truck tire places in town and everybody is having difficulties with my rear rims. They're not regular split rims, some people say they might be twist apart rims, some people say they might be converted to tubeless, some people call them suicide rims, they are 100% not split rims. Nobody seems to know specifically what to do. Does anybody know someone in <st1lace w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Brooklyn</st1:City> <st1:State w:st="on">NY</st1:State></st1lace> that could help with this? You can see my truck at www.purple53.com
While you say that they are 100% not split rims, I fear you aren't seeing them correctly. From the front they look like solid one piece rims, but from the back I think I see in your pictures that they are what are generally called "widow makers". The correct name for them is Firestone RH-5°. Please look at the below pictures and see if this is what you have. If so, no reputable shop will work on them anymore for insurance and liability reasons. You are then left, like many of us, with the need to find replacement wheels. Rather than me ramble on about your options, please do a forum search of "split rims", "widow makers", "Firestone RH-5°", or "multi-part wheel safety" to see all the prior threads that have been devoted to this subject. If your wheels are not as I've pictured, it would be helpful to have better pictures of them. Stu
The only NY source of big truck parts I'm aware of is Job Lot (www.joblotauto.com) in Queens. They are a source for new parts, but may also have leads you can use for used wheels. A good set of "lock ring" wheels would be a good solution for you. Another source in CT is Chuck's Trucks (www.chuckstrucksllc.com). Chuck keeps his eyes open for the one piece tubeless wheels that are so highly sought after. If he doesn't have any himself, he may know of sources. Good luck with them.
