Can anybody tell me if you should greese new locking hubs before installed ? It seems to me it would prolong the life of the hub assy., if you were to pack the inside of the assy. with greese. Although, I did notice a diaprahm on the outer end of the assy. Dont know if that would be effected or not ? Thanks for your help.
New hubs should come with the proper amount of grease. I have heard of folks spraying some thin lubricants on them after awhile if they get in deep watery mud for prolonged periods, but I expect is was after they've been contaminated.
Are you replacing the hubs with a different design or OEM? Is your system ESOF or manual?
I tried to get Warn hubs for it, but the F-350 super duty dually is the only one they dont have a replacment for. I got Ford hubs from the dealer for 220.00 ea. Also it is ESOF. Now I see a puplication about drilling a 5/8" hole in the axel shaft to make way for tabs on the hub assy. I don't quite understand this, could you enlighten me on this matter? Thank-You
The 5/8" drill is only applicable to some 1999's. You'll have to inspect the axles to see if yours is one of them.
You'll know it needs doing if you just remove the snap ring that retains the hub locks, pull the lock out of the hub, and look at the end of the axle shaft. It may already have the end drilled.
Even if it needs drilling, it isn't that hard to do. You just have to follow the directions in the TSB to insure you don't get chips into the hub assembly.
Incidentally, our fellow FTE'r Guzzle, is looking for old used ones, to play around with. See the yellow box at: http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/allube.html
