My drive shaft blew off a while back and i finally took it appart the other day. This is what it looks like. The metal teeth are all fine, it's only the blue plastic that got ripped up. The rubber boot around the slip joint was all tore up so there was no grease in it for a few years. i put a new one on and packed it with grease.
I have a bad vibration and a bit of noise which i think is all coming from a bad rear axle (been told it's bad pinion bearings).
My question is, could any of these problems be associated with my drive shaft looking like this?
And, would it be worth it for me to replace it anyway?
thanks guys, can you explain though how i would check that. There is no play in them (one was bad, but i replaced it). I marked the ds before pulling it apart, but what exactly do you mean by making sure they are in time or lined up?
Were talking about the universals on both ends of the driveshaft. If you marked the splines so that you got the same male spline in the same female spline, then your OK. What happens at a universal is while one side is turning constant (engine side), the driveshaft is actully speeding up a little and slowing down a little every revolotion. So if the two U-joints are in line it converts this osilation back to constant speed at the diff. If not, your trying to speed the wheels up and down. (vibration)
I'm not fermilliar with the blue coating. It looks like prussian blueing used to check contact patch. In any case, I dont think its something to worry about as long as you pack it with grease.
