I am looking for any information that I can find on who makes a true high performance 429-460 head.
I'm not interested in any of the old cast iron heads simply because they do not have a very efficient performance oriented port configuration.
For a true performance engine the aluminum cobra jet and the new edelbrock heads just don't have what it takes.
If anyone knows of a real aluminum head with some respectable flow numbers (and where I can find some information on these heads)please let me know
Any information is greatly appreciated
Ive seen ported aluminum cobra jets make over 700 hp on a 460 so i dont know quite what ur looking for. ford racing performance parts also has a wedge head that is for racing. Blue Thunder makes an aluminum head and so does Trick Flow. Super Ford did some tests with those heads about a year or so ago so you might try some old issues of super ford mag.
I'm not quite sure what power level you want, but the Cobra Jet heads are on Ford's 514 crate motor. In this month's Super Ford, they pulled 650+Hp and 660+ftlbs with these heads, WITH NO PORTING. Obviously you could get them ported if you needed more power, or you could look in the Ford Motorsport catalog, they have several higher "steps" of heads. I know for sure that they sell what is basically an oversized Yates head, they just took the small block NASCAR design and blew it up for a big block, definitely high performance, definitely big money. Hope this helps.
I have run both, "trick Flow" and iron CJ's. The Cj's whether there iron or aluminum will only make around 650 H.P. (they are OLD technology) I picked up 100 H.P. by bolting on the "Trick Flow" heads with no other changes. With the right porting, cam , compression, etc. you should be able to make 800 to 900 H.P. but it will not be cheap. Expect to pay $3,500-5,000 for the heads with the right valve train pieces and proper manifold.
mmmm...have you ever looked at blue thunder heads? they are available with ford or chevy exhaust bolt patterns, and the flow rates are, if I remember, capable of almost 500 cfm on intake. try http://www.bluethunderauto.com
The Blue thunder heads are capable of around 400 cfm on the intake side. The 460 "yates" head flows around 500 intake and 375 exhaust out of the box.
As for the 100 hp gain of Trick flow compared to CJ, I'm not sure I buy that. The flow numbers aren't that much different. The CJ's may be old technology but they do flow well. The trick flows are nice but they won't get you 100 hp out of the box, with no other changes. You rarely see manufacturers even try to claim 100 hp gain and if they do they at least include a cam change and that's compared to stock type heads. CJ's are not stock heads, to say the least. To make 900 hp, (naturally aspirated,) your going to have to have the Yates heads. Nothing else compares. BTW, the rockers for the Yates head are about $100 EACH!!!
