I have a '91 F250 SC 4WD with 460 EFI, 5 spd with 3.73's. Been a great truck - power for pulling horses & hay, and unheard of gas mileage for the engine - 14 mpg plus - and as high as 16.5 empty. Burns about a quart of oil between changes now, and I've noticed a loss in power, but fires up every day. So it's hard for me to part with the old melon wagon. It's got 194,000 miles and I've never done a thing to it, and I still drive it 25+ miles/day. I've been thinking about buying a newer diesel crew cab for the extra room and because I do miss having a diesel. But.......looking for opinions - short block or long block this 460 and keep going? Including tranny work, new captain's chairs, and rebuild, I figure I'll have $3000-5000 into it and basically a new truck. Body's in great shape, and I wouldn't even bother with a paint job - it's still pretty good, too. Any thoughts or suggestions or past experience? Thanks in advance. Rick
I've got a 1990 F-250, 460, E4OD, 4:10's, regular cab XLT Lariat. I recently made the decision to keep the truck and start rebuilding. The engine cost $1900 to rebuild it. Tranny was $2100. I replaced the 3:54 gears with 4:10's a couple of years ago, and replaced all the bearings in the front and rear end at that time. I also added a possi to the rear. The truck now has 160,000 miles on it, but it is in such clean condition, that it appears to have less than 50,000 miles on it. I am now getting ready to remove the heads and send them to Jim Grubb in California for some modification. He also has a special cam that increases torque without messing with the computer. It adds lift without changing duration. My engine also has Doug Thorley tri-y headers, a flowmaster muffler, a 3" mandrel bent tail pipe, and a k&n filter. I tried a hypertech power module, but saw zero gains. I am glad I kept the truck and started rebuilding. It outperforms the new trucks with the v-10's, and rebuilding it is a lot cheaper than a new truck. Besides, I like the truck! I went the same route with looking at newer trucks and came to this conclusion; great trucks aren't bought, their built. I have a 1990 F-250 Extended Cab with the 460 and 5 speed. The engine had over 180,000 and I wanted to rebuild it before show season. (I run Barrel and Gymkhana horses.) Instead of buying a replacement core, I purchased a used engine out of a '95 with 75,000 miles. Now, I have a good engine with at least 100,000 miles of life left and a engine in the garage that will receive a complete rebuilt when time and money allows.
