First water then air...

Since getting our water flow back I dove into the gravel truck yesterday. I replaced the air compressor governor on my gravel only to find out that wasn`t the problem...Good thing it was only $20 for a rebuilt unit.
After removing air lines I found a big chunk of ice in the last one, thawed it out, works fine.
That`s a bit wierd, first time in 9 years that it froze up.

Isn't that always the way, you find it in the last place you look.

This is about the right weather for freezing stuff up. It was plus one at noon today and when I left work at four it was -12 and a howling wind, I am not sure what the windchill was but it was a big drop from noon.

could be a combination of the thaw and freeze we've been having. that and a pile of salt being used... was the ice in the lines or around it?? if it was in the lines, you've been collection moisture in the compressor...

I haven`t used this truck for a couple of months and the last time I did I noticed the air pressure was building very slowly. It was a very cold day in Dec., -25 and a big windchill. I wasn`t sure if I`d even get the air up to get home that nite.

Air pressure is needed to release the springs that lock on/dynatmite the brakes without air pressure. No air, the brakes are all the way on....You don`t move!

Sherm ---> crash course:

There are tow sides to a trucks braking system - Service and Emergency.

The Emergency side of things is the park brakes. When you remove all air from the system (like a truck at rest where the tanks are empty - or - when the air brake buttons are pulled), there is a big spring inside the air pot that applies a parking brake (there are some older trucks that only have this on one axle and some older trailers that dont have any park brakes).

The Service side of things is what is activated when you are driving and apply the brakes to slow down. Air pressure is what does that as well. While driving, the park brake spring is being held off by air pressure. This all takes place in the air pot which you have probably seen under a truck/trailer. The most common type have two diaphrams in there and a big park spring and a smaller service spring. These things are dangerous as there is some real caged spring energy contained in them.
