Electric Fans

I have a 05 F350 that I have made a couple modifications on. I can’t list them all right now, but what is important is that I have a very LARGE Warn bumper with a 16.5k Warn winch mounted inside. After I had these installed I noticed an increase of almost 200 degrees in my EGTs. So I ordered a hood designed to remove the hot air from my engine compartment (which worked).

What my problem is that when I go to shut the truck down; that it takes a considerable amount of time for my EGTs to drop. I have to either wait for the EGTs to drop, press the button for the 5 min turbo timer or press the button for the 1 min turbo timer. At $3.60 a gallon I NEED this time to be as short as possible and 1 min isn’t always enough.

I don’t want to replace the stock fan with electric fans because they don’t move as much air as the stock one does and I do a ton of heavy towing. Is there a way to have the best of both worlds???

Thanks for any input.

I may be missing something here, but I think you're dealing with 2 seperate issues here, EGT's and coolant temp. I don't think a lower coolant temp will affect your EGT's and vice versa. I'm guessing one of your many mods, in particular a tuner is responsible for the high EGT's and maybe the new bumper is restricting airflow and causing higher coolant temps. Please set me straight if I'm wrong.

You’re both….
My concern is with getting the EGTs to drop while idling not driving. My coolant temp is fine. If I can get more airflow through my intercooler while idling my, EGTs will (should) drop faster. The bumper is restricting airflow, which is why I compensated with the hood allowing the hot air to escape easier.
BTW….intercooler is not stock, almost 25% bigger than factory.

I didn't realize there was such a correlation between air intake temp and EGT. I thought EGT was more a function of how much fuel was being burned, hence the comment about the tuner. Maybe try to open the hood to see if the EGT's drop.

Opening the hood helps a bit, not much and I still have to stand there.
Spraying water on the radiator from the front helps a lot, but I don't think they want me parking in the sprinklers at Home Depot.

Wouldn't spraying water on a hot radiator cause it to crack? I was told long ago that is not a good idea. Maybe you were just joking, though.

No. If it could you would not be able to drive in heavy rain.

Idling fuel use is pretty low, so don't worry too much about that. When a diesel is heat soaked (after heavy towing or plowing), it would be normal for it to take 5 minutes for EGT's to drop to 300-400F, which is fine to shut down at. What EGT's do you see when driving unloaded on the highway at 60, 70 and 80 MPH? That will give us some indication as to whether your engine is running normal.

Do you have exhaust on your truck. I dont tow very much, but when I do, I noticed my truck cools down faster now that I have the MBRP 4" turbo back than when I had the factory exhaust on. Just a thought.

your seeing the higher egts because the new bumper you put on has cut off the air flow to the intercooler. if the air going into the engine is warmer than usual the exhaust gasses are going to be warmer too. about the only thing you can do is get a bigger intercooler and water/meth system to cool things down.

So it sounds like I'm SOL.
Truck runs about 800* at freeway speeds so it is well with in normal ranges...just takes forever to cool down.
When the truck is ideling the fan isn't turning so the engine has almost zero airflow.

what kind of water/meth systems are out there??
I've seen them on race cars with the little water jets spraying on the intercoolers but never seen one on a diesel.

If I were you id talk to matt at spartan about it. He knows alot about them and if used properly im sure you can add it on a timer so It stays on as your getting close to where your gonna be shutting down the truck. These don't spray on the intercoolers they spray directly into the engine through your intake elbow. once it hits the hot motor it turns directly into steam and cleans your motor in the process of cooling it. some have said it makes quite A diff.
Mabey theres a way to make a slight mod to your bumper where you could improvise an air dam to direct more air to your intercooler too?

Like you said before you could run a Intercooler sprayer. I use it on turbo track cars. All I do is fab a 5 gallon box out of sheet metal put it in the trunk and hook up a windshield wiper pump to it then put a switch in the cab.

They work great on the track never used one for something like that though.

oh yea and it gets really annoying filling the tank with water.
