Fuel filter

I have a 98 Expedition Eddie Bauer 4X4 5.4l. I am going to change the fuel filter, it looks pretty straight forward. Are there any tricks involved like releasing line pressure or anything like that? You know what they say, if it looks too easy, you are probably missing something. Thanks.

You need to release the fuel pressure by either disconnecting the switch behind the passengers kick panel or removing the negative battery terminal. You will also need a 3/8th (I think) fuel line disconnect tool. Fuel will spill out so use caution.

Thanks for the tips sbclemens. I already have the line tool but the battery cable trick confirms what I thought I may need to do. Thanks for the info!

I don't think removing the battery cable is going to relieve the fuel pressure. You could remove the fuel pump fuse and then start the vehicle up and let it run until it stalls for lack of fuel. That should relieve the fuel pressure.

will letting it run out of fuel damage the fuel pump?

Correct. Just removing the cable or the switch will NOT relieve the pressure. Pulling the fuse and cranking the engine (I never could get it to start doing this) will relieve the pressure. It will not damage the pump.

Here is a variation of something I posted on an Expedition mailing list in 1999 when I replaced the fuel filter in our 1998 Expedition. I use this procedure on our 2000 Expedition now. See if this helps.
  1. I purchased a cheap Ampro fuel line disconnect tool (part # T70045). This one is like a pair of pliers with 3/8” disconnect on one end and a 5/16” provision on the other. Cost me $3.99 at Advance Auto Parts. KD makes an identical tool (USA) for about $11 or so.<O</O
  2. Unplugged the 20 amp fuel pump fuse.
  3. Loosened the fuel filler cap and cranked the engine 3 or 4 times. It did not start. After this I replaced the fuel filler cap.<O</O
  4. Got under the truck and took the transfer case skid plate off. Makes it a little easy to access the filter. Loosened the hose clamp securing the fuel filter to the bracket and undid the fuel line clamps.<O</O
  5. Used the 5/16 end of the quick disconnect tool and undid the inlet end of the fuel filter, just felt wetness, there was no real spillage of fuel from this end. I kept a wide plastic container under the lines just in case.<O</O
  6. Then I disconnected the outlet end of the filter. Some fuel spilled out from the disconnected line that goes to the engine. I waited until the fuel stopped spilling, ~10 secs. or so. The fuel was caught in the plastic container. Then I tipped the filter towards the container and most of the fuel in the filter drained out into the container. That was it, no more fuel spillage.<O</O
  7. Put the new filter through the bracket and connected the line couplings.
  8. Thereafter, snug the hose clamp.<O</O
