So what were the ford guys smoking when they designed the trans fluid check on my 05 explorer. Put it up in the air level and open the plug and see if fluid drips out!!! To fill it you need a pump. Designers are making these things even harder for the average diy'er to do. Guess they want us all to go to the stealership and pay $95/hr for something you can do yourself if you have the know how. I enjoy maintaining my own vehicle and have done so for many years, largely for economic reasons. (the aforementioned $95/hr)
One reason I got rid of my Aerostar was the agony you had to go through to maintain it. Looks like I'm gonna have grief again or a lighter wallet. I'm a maintenance junkie and grease and oil is cheaper than parts. It also helps fuel economy when fluids are clean and changed at regular intervals.I'm a firm believer in good fluids, and keeping them fresh as possible.
I hear your frustration (I have a 05 XLT with the V8). I do most of my own work too. After seeing all the issues with the tranny when the people on this forum have had fluid changes, I am afraid to have it changed. I bought the manuals for this Explorer so I could do my own troubleshooting (I have a diagnostic tool to plug in), like you I do not want to pay the stealership for something I can do myself. I need to research the tranny more though. When I look at all the new cars today they are made so difficult to work on, I is almost impossible for the do it yourselfer to do anything other than change the oil and maybe the antifreeze now.
i got a 2002. these are excellent little SUVs. the transmission is not a real big problem. some have troubles, but the percentage is small. i have changed the oil twice in mine. pull the plug and drain the pan, then remove and do the filter just like any other trans. i didnt change the entire system, just the 5 quarts in the pan. reinstall the pan, put in the outer plug (stand tube) and pull the small center plug. i put 5 quarts of MERCON V in a weed sprayer and pumped it up thru the hole. when its flull, it runs backward past the overflow tube. i put about a cup extra in it and then installed the center plug. you are suppose to warm it up and crawl back under and check again, but i did not do that either time. has over 100k now.
