What were you doing when you got your tanks dipped, towing, maybe 150MPH?

If it's a personal vehicle, they can't dip your tank. 4th amendment and all that.... it's been through the courts and upheld.
Are you sure about that? I have passenger plates so I can refuse to let them dip? I heard they can fine just for refusing!

Here in Texas the use of "farm tags" on your truck does not grant you the right to not pay road tax which here is the only difference between pump fuel and red fuel.

My fuel guy sent notice early last year that the red fuel was UL.

Farm tags do provide a lower cost registration fee and generally the DOT guys or DPS won't bother you if you have a wide (10') load of hay on the road.

I know of three larger (2500+ ac) operations around me that have stopped using red fuel. They buy 10,000 gal loads taxed fuel and file to recover the taxes. The percentage of fuel used "on road" is so low it is lost in the numbers. No issues with red fuel being used in road vehicles and no need for a second fuel storage area which is becoming more of a problem every year.

In KY, I dont think it is ever legal to run off road on road. A neighbor, just across the line in TN, had a diesel VW Rabbit he was running farm fuel in, driving back and forth to work a public job. Somehow he got caught. There were no big $10000 fine but he did have to pay a bunch of road tax back. They prorated his bulk storage tank on the farm. I am pretty sure he is running road fuel now, shook him ups.

Like 2 Stroke Man said, I have seen the DOT at the cattle yards checking trucks. I have never been checked, but I also dont have anything to worry about.

I see so they just claim it at tax time what kind of problems are they having with having more than one tank for storage?

Are they laying down new rules for that for you guys? here they want double wall tanks, a cement containment or some kind of containment for under the tank even home owners now that use fuel for heat are having to upgrade there tanks and make a containment

Places I go that folks get checked at are Farm Auctions, Stock Sale barns, and last year at a seminar for pesticide applicators.

If you are going 150 mph it is tough for them to dip the tank.

Yes the big guys are, and most have finished, building the fueling centers that use above ground tanks mounted on a concrete pad with something like a 30" poured concrete wall to contain any failure. I have not done much as I have a small operation and only burn about 1000 gal/year. I just have a 400 gal overhead tank and the fuel guy is out about three times a year.

I am not aware of any problems with the single tank, but these guys use a lot of fuel with trators that hold 400 gallon in the tank. They do still have trailer mounted fuel tanks, about 500 gallons, for fueling in the field.

I hauled fuel briefly for Imperial oil and did what was called the co-op run the farmers do use a lot of fuel!

lots of them had clemmer double wall above ground tanks I think the co-op helped most of them out with with the upgrades

The fuel companies used to provide your storage tank, of course that locked you into using that company. Some companies still provide the tanks like I have and up to 2500 gallons, but most folks by their own and shop price even if it is to lock an annual price. I have had the same fuel company for 10 years now. Prices is competitive and their service is great.

yeah, farmers in IN can't run the red either.. I know a lot of guys who do though.. it seems the DOT don't really bother checking around here.. I've owned my truck for about a year and I havn't been checked yet.. my BIL down in the south end of the state trucks hogs in a F450. he has only been stoped once as far as I know.

well the boys in blue(dot) up here are trying to justify their jobs. They have closed down two scales on the interstate and have put restrictions on how long they can work and how far they can go from home base so i think they are trying to look good by busting anything they can!!!!!!!

The ministry of transportation here in Ontario Canada has it,s own department just for this kinda stuff they chase guys down with their lights on and also sit at the scales I have been checked several times now.The guys that work in the logging Industry all have slip tanks in the back of their trucks to fuel up their equipment and for some reason the fuel ends up in the truck LOL I wonder how that would happen?
