73 429 Vs 83 460

Hey guys, i recently bought an 83 f250 with a seized up 460. i tore down the 460 and it turned out to be a snapped rod but im fairly sure that everything is rebuildable. it seemed like a lot of work though and i dont have much time and no up front cash, so i ended up buying a 73 429 off of my friend. heres the question, i know that the 73 is supposed to put out about 220hp and 380lb\ft, but what does that 460 put out stock? also, if i were to rebuild the 460, i would put in a better cam and a timing set that eliminates the factory retarded timing. how would that stack up to the stock 73? one last question...what all did ford do to the 429 after 72 to kill over one third its hp other than the drastically lower compression? is that the year that they started retarding the cam timing? ...so basically, would it be worth it to spend all the time and money to freshen up the 460 or should i just toss in the 429 (which was supposedly rebuilt a year before sitting for a long time).

Yes the 429 would have had a retarded crank sprocket, but if it has been rebuilt it may have been changed. You would have to change the oil pan to put the 429 in and find a internal flexplate/flywheel because you will have balance problems if you use the 460 one. They went from internal to external balance in 78. Good luck in what you do.

Ford did what the other mfgs did...besides lowering compression they started rating HP as net (how much HP gets to the rear wheels after subtracting parasitic losses from driving the power steering, AC, alternator, etc.) instead of gross HP (HP you measure at the flywheel). If you run any of the computer dyno programs you'll see that a 1 point drop in compression only makes about 10-15 HP differance.
Go for the cubic inches...

LAST EDITED ON 25-Feb-01 AT 01:14 PM (EST)[p]Deen, Net and Gross are still flywheel HP #'s. You're correct on the accessory part. There's usually about a 15% HP drop from a manufacturers rating to the rear wheel on cars, a little more on trucks and 4WD. An Example would be the 310 HP V10 Ford puts down 230HP(I've got to double check)to the rear wheels and a 305HP '97 Cobra puts down around 260HP to the rear wheels.

If memory serves me the '83 460 had around 230HP and 390#'s torque.
