Engine Oil Coolers

I have a block mounted cooler to fit a 3 liter Duratec. Since the Duratec and the 4.6 take the same filter (FL820S), would it be possible to fit it onto the 4.6? I know there are cooler adapters to fit the 4.6 that bolt to the block and have fittings to route oil to a front mounted water cooled cooler, but this seems rather convenient, and the old 302s and 351s used them in police service.
What do you think? Anyone ever done it?

even if it doesn't work with the radiator, it should work with an external oil cooler that you would have to mount. you can get one from summit I think.
