Its on top of the rear diff. Local auto parts sell them. Prices range from 12 to 20 bucks. The dealership calls it the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). Most aftermarket places call it the ABS (antilock brake sensor). You can try cleaning it but if you're going to get under there anyway might as will replace it. Of course, the choice is your's.
Edit: Mark beat me to it. I have to learn to type with more than one finger

Sorry, don't have any on me, but I could take some tonight.
1 thing I noticed... was the part they gave me had a longer neck on it than the one I took out. The clip didn't seem to go on all the way... but it alleviated the problem. I cleaned up the old one, and now I carry it with me along with the rachet to change it back out if need be.
Looks like this though:
Sorry, just drew that up in MSPAINT.
Thats the ABS Sensor...
If you need a pic of the VSS just ask... I could probably draw a horrible pic of that too.
Napa sells the Sensor (they call it a ABS sensor).. napa p/n is 530780 , $10.49...Easy to change. I have also read the metal flakes in the rear end can also affect the sensor.. changing fluid will be next step..
could also be output speed sensor which is on transmission
Yeah, I replaced the one on the diff and want to replace the tranny one also just as PM. Where exactly is it located. A quick look and I did not notice any sensors...?
ok this might be a dumb question, but what was acting up in order to have this replaced....The guage cluster not telling u the mileage? I am asking because not to long ago mine started to go to 40mph and stop .... so ive been driving around not knowing how fast im going.
Usually when the VSS on the rear pumpkin goes south, the speedo needle bounces until about 40 MPH then acts normal and the overdrive light (if it's an auto) blinks. Zeus, since you have a handshaker, obviously no overdrive blinky for you. Like the others said, easy fix and cheap.
Thanks for the info. I am replacing both because I have had an erradic speedo at times, plus I had a code, can't remember the number right now, that said an error with the speed sensor relating to the tranny one. The rear sensor is only $25 form Ford and I can't imagine the tranny sensor is much either. I do know that the sensors are not the same part. I also know these problems may have been related to not soldering the wires to the Tru Speed, but those have now been soldered. Replacing both sensors to not have to wonder/worry anymore...
On a side note, I first went to NAPA this weekend for the diff sensor and paid $9 for it. The sensor did not fit the electrical harness properly and would not allow the harness to clip onto the sensor. I returned the part, so I advise don't waste your time w/ Napa. The NAPA guy showed me the tranny sensor on the puter and it was different, but he did not have it in stock. Back to Ford again...

At least I'm not the only one. BUT I left mine in... the ABS light is no longer on, the OD light isn't flashing... and the tranny is shifting fine.
