79 f-150 400 eng.running hot changed thermostat, removed thermostat, ran cooler, tested thermostat put in boiling water it's opening up. put thermostat back in properly(not backwards) continues to run hot. rad is good, anybody know if it could be weak waterpump ie. worn impeller, no leaks, anybody out there heard this before?
Hows you ignition timing? Too advanced or retarded? How's the carb tuning? Too lean?
You say the radiator is good, but how are the fins? Clean? How's the fan blade? Stock or one of those crappy flexfans?
Josh
Kinda new to the whole american V8 tuning thing, but may I ask, what is wrong with a flex fan? Less rotating mass, and moves alot of air. Is there something I dont know about it? We put one on our Jeep Comanche and it worked wonders.
Well I mean one of those cheap Flex-a-lite flex fans that "supposedly" flatten out as the RPM increases to lessen the drag on the motor. Problem is, they don't move a lot of air to begin with.
Like Mil1ion suggested, how are you determining the engine is running hot? The factory gauge can literally be all over the place.
i don't know 100%, but without thermostat in gauge goes from hot to much cooler, also when thermostat in, bottom rad hose cool, top hose i can collapse with my bare hand. i've changed sending unit also. same results.
Water pump problems usually involve leaking and squealing. What fan do you have? Clutch fans can lose the silicone and slip. You need a shroud for sure.
guage type, yes they do run hot, i'm up in canada, the weather is cold, when summer comes then i tow 20' travel trailer so i can't have heating issues. i should likely be ok till then as it hasn't completly overheated yet.
i did the thermomiter test ended up about 200 deg. so i guess it will just run hot,i wonder now if the block is restricted with crud from previous people putting in rad seal ect.also it had sat for a while. only way to know for sure is to pop out a frost plug and see what kind of crap is in block, i changed a frost plug on an older ford before and i couldn't believe what came out, thick gobs of greasy stuff.
We sorta did ours with a flush like that. Only we decided to replace the factory waterpump. (Hey..it is a 1975 360 factory pump....) Some of that crud that came out of the waterpump ports on the block? Ewwwwwwww... Brown and crusty bits and even a few chunks/flakes.
If someone used sealer? I've actually seen that stuff turn into major chunks in radiators. Not talking about the silver solder seal stuff that looks like small metal flakes---the stuff that looks like a can of baked beans that supposedly won't do 'any harm'... That stuff plugged up several heater cores on our customers cars and trucks--and bunged up any smaller passageways it could find.
Of course that's just my opinion...your mileage may vary.
