Yes remove any oil the gets into the cylinder. And you still have to pull the glow plug also. I almost learned the hard way.
I had changed an ijector once to do the o -rings pulled the GP cleaned everythign out well. And all was good for start up.
O-ring had not solved the problem so I need to change the injector. Replaced the injector but did not pull the GP and suck out the oil there... OOPS.. it wanted to lock up. Had to pull it all back open and clean the oil again.

Kris, i have always removed the rear most injectors first. I thought this was the correct practice and the way I have always done it. Now i know it is probably a minimal detail but I was just wondering your take on it.
It doesnt really matter which way you pull them out, because they all have to come out, and all of the cylinders will get "some" oil in them no matter which one you pull out first.

yeah, ive seen this and done it both ways, however i did notice swamps reccommends rear most first because of the "slope of the engine"
I won't get into any of the details/techniques already mentioned. I will just day that the injectors can be pried from either the exhaust side or the intake valley side as long as you remove the oil deflectors and make sure the clamp is clear of the upper retaining bolt.
Some instructions call for prying on the exhaust side. Does not work well on the #3-7 injectors. So remove the VC gasket and pry from the valley side. Too easy. Otherwise, toil away. Matter of fact, remove VC gaskets and pry all out from that side. Easier is better.
I did the injector swap this weekend went great all i did was pulled inter cooler tube pasenger side and valve cover. then just pulled out the injector. I took out the botom bolt and used the top on to push the injector out by unscrewing it. the head hits part of the injector hold down thing. pulled injector out fast as i could and stuffed some rags in the hole to catch some oil letting all the rest i dint catch run down into the cyclinder. pulled glow plug out. went and graped my bottle of 409 cleaner pulled the spritser top out of the bottle pushed the straw of the spritser inthe injector tip hole and hte glow plug hole and started spraying it out into a couple of rags. turned the motor over with breaker bar untile the piston came all the way to the top. used the straw in further. the straw bent right to the bottom of the piston getting most of the oil out. lubed up the new injector slid it in and torqued it down. put it back together and took her for a spin. great way to say 240 bucks witch the diesel shop in town wanted for and injector swap.
That how i did it and want to say thanks to all you guys out there for the help.

i really liked your creative idea of using a 409 "spritser" to get the oil out of the cylinder.
I used the spritser for the fact i wasnt able to get the rear plug out of the head for the oil and the front plug is burried under the ac compress or and pullys didnt feal like taking the exhaust out our pulling all that stuff out if i could do it another way i also thought of using a suring with a little hoe on it i figured that would of worked allso for the at home diy guys with out any fancy tools.
if you can get up on top of the engine, you can almost pop them out with your hands. It's not much resistance. Just use a little prybar to get some leverage on the valve cover rail, and then pop they squirt out. It's not like you really need to hang onto the pry bar.
