I purchased these tires with about 4500 miles on them but when I picked them up it was raining. After I had them put on (still raining) and when things dried out I noticed what appears to be signs of age/deteriation. All four tires have fine cracking between treads (off road tires). Tires manufactured in 2004 according to sidewall. Are these unsafe? Tread is fine and no other signs of wear. I wanted to add picture but don't know how. Do I have to post from a website? I'm asking for my money back but worried this craigslist guy knew and will neglect to honor my request.
you have weather checking caused by either UV or ozone. there are a couple of belts running underneath the treads that do the work of the tire plus a rubber air seal applied to the inside. if the gaps aren't really huge, the tire is probably fine if it doesn't leak air. BTW really huge gaps are big enough to shove a penny into and it will stick.
we are talking about cracks between the wiggly lines where the road meets the tires right?
I AM a tire person
being off-road tires, they might be stress cracks due to hardening of the rubber due to ozone and low pressure required to retain flexibility over obstacles
without looking at them myslelf, it's hard to judge, but a tire that was manufactured in 2004 would most nearly be expected to show them..
the question would be, are they unsafe?
again, it would depend on if the cracks extend to the cord body or the belting of the tire. Moisture inside a tire is hazardous to their health.
I had tired from 2001 and they sat for a LONG time - Dry rotted. They didnt look bad at all but going 70mph one of them ripped apart and thank the good lord i had two hands on the wheel. Your are alot newer and seem (JUST BY YOUR DESCRIPTION) to be alright to drive on. i would just keep 2 hands on the wheel always
TNT, if i were you i would not take the chance on running them. i had a poor set of tires on my truck which led to hydroplaning, which is why i rolled the truck. just my .02 but why risk your life or someone else's for a good deal?
I think I know what ur talking about, my Mud-KM's did that a few weeks after i put em on my truck...they had these small little cracks between the tread and it looked like it was falling apart. Still running em on my truck wit no probs. Almost everytime I start my truck i'de get out and check the tires over once for nails and visually check the tires pressure(make sure its not over/under inflated). Unless you can see the white threads inside the tire i wouldnt worry to much about it.
