What to do about pulled muscles

Well 2 days ago I got in the gym with a buddy of mine and lifted till I couldnt lift anymore...The problem is I hadnt worked out in like 3 or 4 years so needless to say Im still in pain...I have a pulled muscle in both my triceps, biceps, and chest muscles...It seems everyday I wake up the pain just keeps getting worse, I quit working out after that 1 time, Anything I should do about the pain??? Apply heat?? Apply Ice?? Elevate??

Check out this site:

It sounds like you just need to take it easy for a while and try some gentle stretching. I'll ask a buddy of mine who is on the track team here what he would do.

well id say your in pain from ripping every muscle fiber possible along with pulled muscles, great way to start, lol

i had gotten back into last year myself, hadnt lifted like you for a couple of years, but i did a normal workout, and to tell you the truth, i literally hurt for like almost 2 weeks, but still continued to train while i was in pain, just different muscle groups.

to me it sounds like you did way to much to get started. with the pulled muscles, id say your done lifting for a little while, rest up, light stretching, eat properly, go high protein to help rebuild those muscle fibers. having really pulled them is not far from tearing those muscles, just be carefull, it sounds like your in a fine line between not working out hard core for few eeeks to a month, vs. not working out for 6 months.

Ouch, that doesnt sound good. I really gone and done it now lol...Another thing I forgot to mention is I cant extend my arms past a 45 degree angle

And Ive already decided what Im going to do, instead of jumping right into the gym...Im going to start running and eating better to get in shape before I set foot in the gym again

you got it my friend. either a fast walk, jog, run, bike, or swim combined with eating right, your body will be ready for the weights and any other lifting exercise you do.

yeah it sounds like you did a little damage by not being able to extend your arm, mine wasnt that extreme, it hurt to take a cd out of my visor, lol. for a couple of weeks.

get on a protein supplement, you can take up to a gram per lb that you weigh. that will help repair your muscles, and build lean muscle as well, taking it easy for awhile, eating right and your exercise of choice, youll be primed for the gym.

beefcake!

NO HEAT! Use ice for 20 minutes at a time. The best OTC pain reliever I found for that sort of situation is IBprofuen. It says only take 200mg at a time but I take 600mg about every 8 hours when I get hurt. Oh yeah, stretching... It will hurt but it will also feel good... It is gonna be like one of those feel good kinda hurts!

Wow, what a coincidence this thread has been posted. I am actually in the same boat right now. I started to lift weights a couple days ago and did some chest and tricep work (I thought I didn't do too much because of this). Well, next day I couldn't bend my left arm and trouble with my right. Still that way today. Not much to do except slowly try stretching muscles out and do not go back to training those muscles for at least a week. Muscle fibers have been torn which is part of weight training, but since those muscles haven't been trained for so long, here we are. The more we train, the less muscle fibers tear and the faster the rebuilding process is, hence we don't get sore after awhile. I knew I would be sore, but not this bad. Felt great when I was working out. But, just shows how out of shape I was. I can handle the soreness, I just want to be able to bend my arms. . i haven't been this miserable for a long time.

The best pain reliever I've ever had hands down, even beats some prescription meds, is three advil liqui-gels (Ibuprofen) with two extra strength tylenol (acetaminophen). This was "prescribed" to me by my dentist after some minor oral surgery. It kicks in in about 15 minutes and wipes out all but the worst pain, at least for me. I think the combination of pain reliever in the tylenol, plus the anti-inflamatory in the advil is what does it.

What you are experiencing as other have said is micro tears of the muscles. This is how they get bigger, but the byproduct is lactic acid fermentation. The only thing that helps with that is to use the muscle in lower stress environment.

As for meds go with an NSAID (non steroidal anti-inflammatory) They would include:
Ibuprofen: Advil
Neproxim Sodium: Alive (sp?)

DO NOT USE HEAT OR ASPIRIN. He will do nothing more than bring the swelling into the tissue and cause you major pain in the long run. You will feel great in the shower or spa, but about 30 minutes later you are going to feel the pain. Also never put heat on a sprin or strain. This will cause the swelling to "pool" in that area. You also could try to get the significant other to do a little deep tissue message to get the lactic acid out of the muscles.

Oh, BTW I work with High School sports teams as a Certified Athletic Trainer

The ole lactic acid burn. You know that you got a good workout when you have the burn. With me, it is usually 48 hrs after the workout is the worst.
As much as it hurts, stretch, and stretch again.

It's usually the worst thing about starting to workout again, but when the soreness is done, workouts feel great. Just have to keep working out and not taking too much time off or back to square one.

This is a prime example of why I don't work out!!! When I see a jogger go by with a smile on his/her face...I'll take up the sport. Until then...jogging gives me the runs!!!

Last time I went to the doctor he reminded me that the previous time he told me I had to get in shape. I told him that I did...I chose round!!!
